I have had this told to me by a senior, although he didn't say it aloud. So I would like to know what's the best immediate response to such criticism. Thanks.

He asks this in front of others? Make sure you nicely say to him that you could meet with him in a conference room where there is more privacy to discuss your performance and leave it at that. If he continues to press, nicely rephrase what you just said and he should get the hint. It is not professional to berate you or make these type of critical comments in front of others. "Always praise in front of others and criticize in private" is the saying, I believe.

The tone of your voice, your facial expression, and your body language are all important in handling this matter.

First, turn and make eye contact, then reply (something to this effect), while showing interest and concern

"I'm sorry my work fails your high standards. Is there something I should change, or do, to improve the quality of my work to better meet your expectations ?"

At this point, you're welcoming his input and suggestions on how to increase quality output and /or productivity.

Don't "react"! Treat is a beginning of a constructive discussion.

Apologize and ask how you can improve. perhaps he can show you how and then make sure you thank him and assure him that your work quality will improve.
