...I think of all the delicious ethnic Jewish food I ate as a child because I was lucky enough to grow up with a young Jewish friend (and his generous mother) living in my neighborhood.

A mindset which is OUTWARD, which they take allegorical and esoteric things literal and seek to be justified in external ritual and traditions which deprive them from any real geniune progression since the concepts and principles which are interwoven in the text they project outwards, isn't being applied within themselves consciously in thought, desire, deed, and word.
