When you become a Christian does Jesus bring peace to all of your family?

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. Matthew 10:34-39

The wording is quite blunt and to the point. Yes, to faithfully (and truly) be a Christian WILL put a person at odds with those around him or her.

John 15:18 If the world hates YOU, YOU know that it has hated me before it hated YOU.
19 If YOU were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is its own. Now because YOU are no part of the world, but I have chosen YOU out of the world, on this account the world hates YOU.
20 Bear in mind the word I said to YOU, A slave is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will persecute YOU also

Also, being a true Christian will not be either a common or popular thing to be.

Matt 7:13 “Go in through the narrow gate; because broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are the ones going in through it; 14 whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it.

From what the Bible has to say, It would be my understanding that if things appear to be going too well and everyone is happy with you, things might not really be going that well, as far as your spirituality is concerned.

Being too popular with the world is not nescessarily a good thing. Who is the head on of the 'world'?

(Jesus speaking with his Disciples)
John 14:. 30 I shall not speak much with YOU anymore, for the ruler of the world is coming. And he has no hold on me.
2Corinth 4:4 The god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through.

Satan (The original dragon) is the God of this world and the Ruler of this system of things. He is the one behind all the misery, suffering, greed and the other bad things going on here now. It will get worse before it gets better.

Rev 12:7 War broke out in heaven: Mi′cha·el and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon and its angels battled 8 but it did not prevail, neither was a place found for them any longer in heaven. 9 So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him.

12 Woe for the earth and for the sea, because the Devil has come down to YOU, having great anger, knowing he has a short period of time

There's more, but enough for now.

It isn't God that causes the division. It is other people's stupidity to accept that you have taken a positive step in your life. As a soldier of the Lord you will find that others who have not gotten to the place where you are in your life will be jealous and petty.
God doesn't judge and we shouldn't judge when someone chooses any type of religion. Believing is what is most important. Freedom of religion is a freedom afforded us all here in the US. What is important is that you believe.
Continue on with your faith and you will only find more peace and happiness.
God is good. People are humans and have faults and errors.

True, Jesus didn't come to bring peace among men, but rather peace between fallen mankind and God:

Luke 2:13-14, "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, AND ON EARTH PEACE, GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN".

God's word never contradicts itself, so this verse must mean something other than peace among men, because of Jesus' own words in the passage which you have quoted.

This peace is described in 2nd Corinthians 5:18-19, "And all things are of God, who HATH reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was IN Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation".

Our thoughts have run along the same line; look at a question which I recently asked:

It is a blessing to see others with similar thoughts. God bless you in your study.

Yes it can cause division if the friends or family are on the opposite side of the fence and are trying to drag a Christian down the road of sin, like if the Christian used to be a druggie, the Christian wouldn't want to be friends with other druggies anymore. I've seen marriages end cuz the Christian was serving the Lord and the other spouse didn't want to have any part in it.

It is not about his teachings that will bring divisions to the family and friends. Those who serves Jesus Christ tend to forget that He came to bring people back to God, the creator of all things. People's tendency to worship Jesus misled them in worshipping Jesus rather than the real God. As long as we continue doing this, people, nations, family and religions will remain divided. Jesus teaches peace but he is not the prince of peace. Those who continue to serve him and not God fully will remain divided.

Yes, it can do, depending on whether or not your family are Christians and understand the importance of living for God and His Kingdom, as opposed to living a selfish life.

I know that some members of my family give my husband and I a difficult time over this at times, but we keep our eyes fixed on the 'big picture'.

i can see how that can happen. Say someone is really bad.
The talk dirty and get drunk and run around with wild women.
But you want to be pleaseing to God and raise your children not to do those things. Well, they come around and it is in the face of your children. You may have to cut off association with those people, to keep your christian attitude.
In some countries christians are persacuted. In Pakistan and some other countries in the middle east those religions are not for freedom of religion. So they kill christians. You may have to die for your religious beliefs. In some cases parents have turned in their children when they found out they were christians. But to die for your faith in Jesus Christ you can be sure to live again. But those who kill you are gone forever.
Jesus died for us shouldn't we be willing to die for him.

Yep!!! Jesus Christ is not the Prince of Peace - he came to test our Earthly loyalties to the loyalty we should have to the One GOD. Think about it - in GOD's eyes, if your family are a bunch of Mafia bosses who kill, oppress and extort people on a daily basis, is it not better to leave them and their wicked ways behind in favour of GOD's grace?

You know that the walk with Christ is paved sometimes with glass. Yet, Praise the Lord for He Is Our Salvation! Amen!

Yes it can bring division. The sword that Jesus spoke of is the Word of God (see Eph. 6)

So...what is more important...the temporal (temporary) or eternity...it's something we must each answer.

Happy New Year!
