Being a christian or a jew or whatever isn't about living a perfect life. We all fall short of being perfect. We all make mistakes. I'll speak as a Christian, but most other religions follow a similar premise.

It is my faith in Christ that causes me to make the decisions I make in my life. While I don't always do exactly as I should, I am trying. But there is the concept of repentance. Christ suffered for our sins, so we could be saved if we have faith in Him. He paid the price for our sins, to redeem us if we choose to be redeemed. But my faith in Him also leads to try and not do as many things that are wrong.

It's about dedicating your life to something greater than yourself, to the one who gave it to you in the first place. Yes, we could fall short, and will. But through His grace and mercy we can be redeemed. It is based on that where we go in the end, and the choices we made along the way.

Why shouldn't people have a faith in something greater? If they don't, than there would be no morals, no values and the world would be much worse off than it is now. I may end up in hell, but it is the choices I made that led me there. But just because I might, it also means I might not. There is a chance I could go to 'heaven' and I want to do what I can to ensure that. In the end, it really is your decision whether you go to 'heaven' or 'hell'. Nobody gets a free ticket to either. It's not decided beforehand. It's based on the life you lead.

If you truly aren't sorry for the things you did that you know deep down are wrong, than you never really dedicated your life to it in the first place. And it's all irrelevant.

Please understand I do not claim to be a Christan or a Jew but I did just take a world religions course so I've had this on my plate for a whole semester. Christianity and Judaism both are religions that believe in forgiveness you will not be punished if you repent and keep believing. These religions are a not that bad, if one has any problems with life they can usually find peace and live better if they follow in the path of god. " I cannot believe I just said that" Most Christians live very nice lives and die happy. Besides if your punished for it after life you might be punished for it during life too.

Because most parents/religions want their kids to grow up as useful, good people in society (which also has rules of behavior)...therefore there must be guidelines.
Most of the time, when you do something your know is wrong and make a conscious decision to break that rule.
Then comes the punishment...to show kids that when they choose to disobey, there are consequences to pay.
Better now, while you are still young, than later when you can wind up in jail...or worse.

*****************************************************************
ADDENDUM:
Because we must base our lives on some sort of behavior structure. If everyone did whatever they wanted, there would be (and at times HAS been) chaos.
If someone admired and wanted something of yours, two things stop them from just taking it.
1. It's wrong because they have been taught "Thou shalt not steal" (or the equivalent for their religious doctrine)
and
2. It's illegal and they will spend time in jail and have to make restitution.
And although you don't HAVE to embrace a religion to respect other people, many people find that their religion of choice helps them to try to live up to higher standard in their lives.
I'm not sure what you are looking for in an answer, but in a nutshell...don't do the wrong thing and you won't get punished.
Do what's right and you get rewarded.
Period.

believing that Jesus is the King of Kings and Lords its not one faith this week, if that's popular, or if not believing sounds cool like I did it my way. The Bible is very clear Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the father but by me. The Bible also says on day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Some will tell the Bible is just a book Christ also says I will harden their hearts I will confuse the wise this is all paraphrase. I wash you the best you have no excuse if you decide not to follow Christ. I wish you the best i will be praying for you.

If you truly believe, you will conduct your life in a way that will eliminate or minimize the punishments.

It all boils down to "Either Heaven and Hell exist or they do not. If they do not exist, then how you behave and what you believe do not matter. If they do, then you know the consequences and must choose your own course." This is plagiarized from a French philosopher, I think Pascal, but I'm not sure.

Choose wisely.

The very fact that you say something is "wrong" means that you believe in objective truth. Since truth is not relative, where do you think it comes from?

God.

When I do something wrong, I am truly sorry for it as conveyed by my emotional guilt and regret.

As a Christian, I believe God is perfect, just, and all-loving. He made a promise to me and all believers that if we accept Christ as our Savior and turn from our sins that we will spend eternity in Heaven. Through Christ, I am made perfect in God's eyes, not by my own actions whether good or bad.

Thus, by faith, I believe a perfect God will not break such a promise which assures me that I will not go to Hell.

I think you misunderstand something about the Christian religion. Sinners have come to God to escape punishment, not to be punished. I cam to God as a sinner in need of forgiveness, and God forgave all my sins. I have the kingdom of heaven to look forward to, not hell.

You can have the same expectation if you will believe in Jesus, and let Him change your life. Believe on Jesus today, then attend a Bible-teaching church to learn how to live for Him.

WHY are you including CHRISTIANS in this question? Christians are FORGIVEN... heck, we ALL are forgiven, just some of us have already accepted that forgiveness, and some have not.

Christians aren't going to be punished for their sins, that's the whole point of Christ's death and resurrection!

Where do you get the idea that it's not our DECISION? IT IS our decision... and Christians have decided to BELIEVE in the saving grace of Jesus. And because we have, we will go to heaven. This is what we refer to as the "Gospel"... the "Good News."

Have a blessed day.

What you don't understand is that .if you don't believe, this will cause the worst punishment ever. If you truely do believe, then you are saved by the grace of Christ, and there is no punishment, because Jesus covered us with his protection and love. To be where you are you WILL be alone on judgement day, with no one to interseed for you.
I pray that doesn't happen to you.
