I gather you want a cellphone, but mom/dad says NO!! , so now, you're trying to find out how old everybody was when they got their cellphone, to build up your argument that "so-and-so got their cellphone when they were only (age) years old !!"

Mom and dad are afraid you're going to run up the cellphone bill. They're also afraid you're going to lose, misplace, or drop and break the cellphone, which are not very cheap to replace.

Start doing more chores, keeping your room looking neat, and saying / doing whatever it takes to keep mom/dad from getting upset on you.

If you demonstrate you're a mature and responsible person, and drop hints (once a week) how you wish you had a cellphone to keep mom/dad posted on where you're at, so they don't worry so much on where you are, or what you're doing at the moment ; then maybe they'll see the logic and wisdom of getting a cellphone to ad you to their calling plan.

Okay, so I'll admit that for the longest time I was not going to get my son a cell phone until he was in junior high (7th grade). This is the age when many kids start taking part in after school athletics, etc. HOWEVER, I caved and just got my 11-year-old (5th grader) a cell phone. I let him "practice" first on a cell phone that didn't have any service to prove he could be responsible with it. Besides, he liked it because even though it didn't have service, he could still take pictures with it. I liked it because even a cell phone without service can call 911. Anyway, my son does pay for his phone ($10 a month) AND I made him pay for the entire year up front with money he earns by mowing the lawn and with some of his birthday money.

In our neighborhood, kids have cell phones as early as the 4th or 5th grade but I believe that's too young. I think most kids have one by the time they are about 12 or 13 but you need to decide when to get your kids one based on (1) how responsible they are, (2) how much they need to get in touch with you and have little or no easy access to other phones and (3) what can you afford. My kids got phones when they were 14 or 15 and really didn't need them before then, although they would tell you otherwise.

Nowadays, I see 10 year olds walking home and talking on their phones. I didn't get my 1st cell phone until I was 21 years old.
