You can remove the tag once it is in your home...it just states that the furniture store can't remove it...so you know that it is new and not made of re-used items.

if you read that actual tag it says
DO NOT REMOVE THIS TAG in big letters and in the little letters under that it says
unless you are the owner and it has reached your house
it is your mattress and you can do as you like with it
and since it is illegal to sell a used mattress you dont have to worry about some one else needing to read it later
you see people selling used sets all the time but if you ask the store for just the mattress they would tell you they cant split the set as they are selling the box springs and giving away the mattress to stay semi legal

You've heard of Big Brother, right? Well, his cousin is Lazy Larry, and all he does is sit around on the couch all day, watching his monitors for the rebels that dare to remove the tags from pillow cases and mattresses. When he catches someone, he sends out the sleep police to arrest you. They bring you in and torture you, then they stick you in a room filled with pillows and mattresses with the tags still on them.
Be careful...they are watching you.

Just remove it and get it over with. Nothing will happen, but keep the tag in case you have questions about content, etc. Believe me, you'll feel like a winner when you tear that darn thing off. It's your mattress and your house...do what you want with it.

If you look carefully, the tags now say something like "Not to be removed, except by consumer". That's you, so once you get it home, you can cut the tag off if you like.

The tag has safety ratings on it, that are required by the government. This is required because mattresses have to have a fire rating.

After you buy it and it's in your home you can do anything you want with it. The tags are on there for safety issues prior to sale.

It should only remain on your mattress until you get it home. Now that it's home you can cut the stupid thing off!
