Kitten Food? (Ingredient List Included)?

Hello all. Before getiing a kitten, I decided to do my research on which kitten food would be acceptable to feed kitty. From my research I learned that there should not be any by-products or gluten, and that the protein source should be the first ingredient on the ingredient list. I think I have found a good brand at last. The brand is Pet Promise. It is listed as a canned entree for cats and kittens. Here is the ingredient list:
Chicken, chicken broth, chicken liver, brown rice, potato protein, carrots, potatoes, minerals [potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, cobalt carbonate, potassium iodide], locust bean gum, guar gum, salt, taurine, vitamins [Vitamin E supplement, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin A supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, niacin, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin D-3 supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid,

Kitten and cat owners, would you feed this brand of food to your kittens/cats? If not, which brand WOULD you feed to kittens? Please include any experiences you may have with this food.

Elaine M, I'm not sure if this is what you wanted to know, but on the website, the only thing I found about preotein that was a percentage was this:

It's not bad - you would do perfectly fine feeding this to your kitten.

The only thing I don't like is the rice and veggies which are unnecessary in cat food. But still, it's far from being the worst food I've ever seen!

If I were starting over with a kitten, I would primarily feed it a properly balanced raw meat diet - ground meat, bones and organs. I'd perhaps supplement this with a canned food, and would of course offer a variety of meats - probably chicken, rabbit and perhaps venison. I might also consider using a commercial raw food such as Nature's Variety.

As for which canned food - I'm currently feeding Nature's Variety Instincts, which is a very very good food, but it is $1.79 per can. If I didn't have a cat with digestive issues, I'd choose a less expensive but just as good food - any of the foods from the What to feed link.

I would not worry about feeding it "kitten" food - I would just make sure it gets its caloric requirements for the day.

This is a decent quality food. I would call it a middle to middle upper grade. The problems with it are the rice, potatoes, carrots and potato protein. cats are oibligate carnivores and have no use for this crap. That said, it is still a good food. If you can afford it, something like wellness and some merrick is grain free. Best of luck to you. Don;t listen to these people promoting dry food/kiten food ect. They obvioulsy haven't even read the labels much less done the reasearch

Looks good, but what 's the protein level? It has to be at least 10% for canned food. If it's less, there isn't enough for a kitten's growth.

I've tried Evo canned, the cats all loved that one. Good ingredients in it too. There were a few others with no by-products, though Wellness was very expensive.

I think that is a good food choice and I would suggest that Wellness canned food - the chicken, beef or turkey without any fish in it would be best for starters. Natural Balance has a chicken and chicken liver and a venison and pea which are also good.

My cats don't like Felidae, Merrick's, Newmann's or any of the varieties that have a lot of vegetables in them like the Pet Promise. They eat the meat and leave the vegetables on their plates.

Cats evolved as obligate carnivores and I have never seen any information on cat nutrition that suggests there is any need for vegetable matter in their diet.

Purina Pro Plan for Kittens-it has an enormous amount of proten and although it has gluten, all show cat people swear by it for coat, nutrition, and the fact that the kittens will eat it forever until you have to switch to Pro Plan for Adult Cats. Give a little soft food also, but mainly hard food for teeth and gastro.

First it is a kitten so you need to get a food for kittens not cats. Second don't just feed your cat/kitten just wet food you need to feed them a combination of wet and dry food both have different advantages and disadvantages. Next ask your local vet and the owner/shop you are getting it from. And finnally you cant just change a animals food right away you have to slowly introduce what you are going to feed it into their system then you can change it for good once you have totally ellinated the other food source. But ask your vet they will know best.

I don't know this food but it sounds wonderful if the cat will eat it.Cats like the salt in dry foods and that is bad for them,but you should try that food.

Pet Promise is a well-regarded brand. I'd certainly give it to your kitten and if he eats it up, stick with it.

I only feed my cats Iams dry cat food, and all they got when they were babies was Iams dry kitten food. The hard kibble helps keep their teeth clean and gums healthy.
