They can both be nice to have around for a yard pet. The chicken will fly up onto tables and be messy. The duck is more likely to stay off outdoor furniture and make it's mess on the ground. A kiddie wading pool will provide adequate water for a duck. Of course a pond would be nicer. Eggs from either one are good for breakfast. Duck eggs aren't "rubbery" as some people think. We have had chickens, geese and ducks and they were all nice to have around. Chickens were the messiest however.

Chicks or ducklings can be purchased at most feed stores, will be apx $2.50 - $6.50 each depending on the breed.

We have 11 bantam chickens and they are all just like dogs. They love being scratched and petted. Sitting in our laps and falling asleep. They will follow us all over the yard too. The come when we call and when we say "bring em home Greg" our rooster starts helping to herd his hens in for the night. But we have spoiled them rotten from day one. They were 1 day old when we got them and we kept them in a baby playpen until they we almost 6 months old in our living room. We let them run around all over the living room too, just made them go in play pen at night. I have pictures of them all sitting on my husband while he is in his recline and they are all sound asleep, including my husband. The picture is so cute.

I prefer ducks. I had two chickens, and they weren't very friendly. But my duck was affectionate. She was a peckin duck, one of the friendliest species of ducks. Like the Aflack duck.

I always had a pet hen when I was young. Would have one today, but our area has coyote now. The last one I had, loved for me to crack walnut and give them to her. She would jump up in my lap, when she saw me or anyone else for that matter, sit down on the concrete wall in front of our yard, she knew she was going to get walnuts.

Think 1st recommendation would be a cat or pooch. Determined on a duck or chicken- a fish or bird (parakeet type).

If you have a place for them to swim, go for the duck. But if you don't, it will probably be miserable.

bantam chicken... they are small, easier to care for and not as messy as a duck
