I have a specific arrangement for my desktop icons but it just won't stick! It's only a matter of time (I'd say less than a week) before the icons start to auto-arrange themselves for one reason or another (like a bad software install, or a screen-resolution change, etc).

One of two things is the likely cause: If you're changing screen resolutions, or swapping external monitors, the icon layout may not fit on the lower resolution screen, so it rearranges automatically. Since this only happens to you once a week or so, I'm betting this is the cause. Or - you could have the icons set to automatically rearrange themselves. Right click anywhere on the empty desktop, look at "View" and see if Auto Arrange is checked.

Add "iconoid" to your startup and have it "auto restore" desktops as you want it. Save the desktop, and it'll restore it for you. It does a lot more too.
