Okay so I am an idiot... I was planing on running/walking a 1/2 marathon on January 7th. Well I kinda forgot about training with finals and water polo. I'm 15 and in really good shape (I play water polo and swim) but I don't know if I should just plan to do it next year or start training and try to do it. What do you think?

Please don't try it this time as you may have a very bad experience and perhaps get injuries that will even effect your water sports. If you really want to have a big part in this years 1/2 marathon, ask if you can be a volunteer at a water/aid station. This way you can see the runners/walkers and see what how well they handle the weather and physical challenge as well as feel good about helping. If you run it next year, you will also have a real appreciation for the volunteers, like you, that provide water and encouragement
I just ran a 1/2 marathon and had a good base of 20 to 25 miles per week and increased my weekly mileage to 30-35 miles a week 6-weeks before the 1/2 with once a week long runs of 8, 10 ,& 12 mile runs. I did well, but only because I prepared for it. Have fun, help out this year, and set your goal for next year with a few 5K's and maybe a 10K before you tackle a 1/2 marathon.

The muscles you use for the sports you cited are completely different from the ones you would use for a 1/2 Marathon (or a race of any distance for that matter). Even though you are in great shape and would probably finish the race, you will regret it as soon as you stop running. Your leg muscles will tighten up, and you will be totally sore the next day when you try to get out of bed. My caution to you is not to do the race this year. Train in advance next year and you'll be fine. Good luck. BB

Not the one on Jan 7. No matter what really good shape you might think you're in for swimming and water polo, it don't translate 100% into running ability.

But you don't have to wait until next year either. Do you run and train at all??? I suggest you build up some mileage and reassess where you are in March or April.

Good Luck

Like the others, I would recommend against racing this distance without building up to it. Your overall good condition will help, but you should build your running distance slowly and consistently before a distance run like this. Often organized runs will have a shorter companion race like a 5K that you could enter. Running is a tremendous sport and stress reducer, and I would encourage you to continue toward your half-marathon goal, but build to it by running longer distances over time. Keep a running log, build to about 25 miles per week, with a long run of 12 to 15 miles once a week. Alternate hard and easy days. I've included a link to a good program to get you ready for a half-marathon in 12 weeks. http://halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/index.htm
