You made a good step toward Islam by rejecting the divinity of Jesus (ra).
Muslims believe Muhammad (sas) to be the most important prophet because he is the final prophet .. his message is for all mankind not just one nation as the preceding prophets .. the shar'ia of Islam is the one that must be followed by all people until the day of judgment. while the preceding shari'as were for specific periods of time. Allah says: If anyone desires a religion other than Islam, never will it be accepted of him; and in the hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost.
EDIT: To Somebody else : please refrain from talking without knowledge .. Allah has already stated in Qur'an that prophets are ranks .. they are not at the same level. 2:253 & 17:55 .. As for the verses you quoted .. Making distinction here means disbelieving and not about status of any Prophet.
Kindly read the tafsir of the verse:
http://tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=2&tid=3791
Allah says about the disbelievers: (And wish to make distinction between Allah and His Messengers (by believing in Allah and disbelieving in His Messengers) saying, "We believe in some but reject others,'' and wish to adopt a way in between. They are in truth disbelievers) (4:150-151).

well, the thing is, God had it planned out. its not like he created Mohammad and just said "hmm...this guy would make a good prophet."
He created him KNOWING tht this guy will be the last prophet. just like in christianity..y did God choose Jesus to be son? b/c it was planned out even before the creation was created.
also, im not sure if he is the most imp. prophet, but i do kno tht its b/c Mohammad had the final updated message, while the other prophets had a message for a specific time and group of ppl.
islam will satisfy all ur questions..u dont have to give up Jesus after u accept islam..u will just understand the truth abt Jesus. who he really was..a Prophet.

God sent down His final message (one that will permanently remain with humanity for the rest of time) through Muhammad and perfected Islam through him. Muhammad was His messenger to the entire world (not just to humans, but to the Jinn as well), and not just to a specific nation or group.
He was basically the 'Seal of Prophets'. Jesus, for example, was sent to convey God's message at a specific time to specific people, while Muhammad's message has lasted to this very day.

that is very good question
and there is a lot of things come in text show that but what I know is:
وما أرسلناك إلا رحمة للعالميين
and that's means "we send you as merciful to mankind"
but according to other scriptures other prophets (Peace Be Upon Them All) came as mercy to their own nation
also If we read story of prophet mohammed in right way we should realize that God select Arabya (Arabic Lang) for Him CZ it`s the most strong Lang in the world and we can also learn from some traditions that prophet Mohammed even forbade to ride animals if that may hurt them !
So God don`t select Moahmmed CZ of his race like what some people try to say but CZ He Was the best example of merciful CZ our Father is also merciful
if you read in story of prophet Mohammed
you know that his tribe fight Him for 25 years
and when He get His rights back and get control over his city ! what you think He do with those enemy He Says
"go you are feel"
for whom for people who fight Him and try to kill Him for 25 years Yes Prophet Mohammmed is My Man

thanks for asking and getting info for yourself and not believing the islaam haters and the crazies who distort the true teachings of islaam.
just like the prophets before him. prophet muhammad (pbuh) came w/ a specific messege for a certain group but thenALLAH(GOD)sent the messge in the form of the qu'ran to all of mankind. who know why ALLAH sent the different books to whom HE sent them . only HE knows the anwer to that question but i suggest you read the qu'ran for yourself w/an open heart and not w/any pre-judgements and then you will understand it fully. i did hat w/ the bible and that's why i'm no longer christian but a proud muslim. take care.

All other prophets were sent for a certain period of time or for a particular nation.but Muhammad was sent for every nations of the world, until it ends(the qiyamah, last day of the world).and he is the last and final prophet.thats y he is most important.
and there wont be any change in his religion, Noone can distort the Quran.God himself wil protect it.
compare both the Bible and the Quran, u will notice a difference.i read Bible, it does seem like its from God, but it also becomes obvious that some men put their own thoughts in it.On the other hand, when u read Quran u wil feel like God Himself is talking to u.

I don't know. I don't think it matters who was God's favourite prophet. We really can't know why God does things, so any religious text are only people ideas as to God believing one prophet more important than another.

Then the Prophet drew near to Allah; then Allah leaned down towards him.
O Prophet! truly We have sent thee as a Witness and a Bearer of glad tidings, and a Warner,
And thou dost, surely, possess sublime moral excellences.
Verily, you have in the Prophet of Allah an excellent model, for him who hopes to meet Allah and the Last Day and who remembers Allah much.
Allah sends down His blessings on the Prophet and His angels pray for him. O ye who believe, you too should invoke His blessings on him and salute him with the salutation of peace.
