Why would God create a place where humans don't exist for billions of years? What is the purpose of that?

The Christians that I know who accept evolution (and yes, there are plenty of them) basically take a stance of "Evolution is what the evidence points to. And I don't believe in a God who would sadistically go out of his way to make it look like he did it differently, just to trick people. As for why things were done in certain ways, the jury is still out when it comes to many of those questions."

Oh, and Ivan: the Darwin recanting-on-his-deathbed story has not only been refuted by his sister, but is completely irrelevant to the standing of a scientific model:

Contrary to what others have said, there are Christians who believe in evolution.

But I don't think there's any good answer to the question you ask. Like you, I don't know why G-d would create a place where humans don't exist. But if humans existed from Day One, then what do you suppose G-d was doing before Day One? I believe such matters will always be beyond our comprehension.

I've known many Christians that accept evolution. The fact is evolution doesn't conflict with God, or Jesus, or any of that, it conflicts with Creationism. Now if a Christian decides to take the bible as 100% flawless truth, then they're out of luck when it comes to defending evolution. However, if a Christian solely believes in the teachings of Jesus, and the basic principles of Christianity, it isn't at all hard for them to accept evolution. It's all about having an open mind.

Condensed answer: God created evolution.

Because life as it existed prior to the advent of humans could not support us. Many conditions had to be met prior to God following through with his plan to bring forth humankind.
The earth has a history of turbulence in its many forms. What we are living now and enjoying would appear to be a bit more tranquil. In its 4 billion plus years much has happended to tchange the face of the earth.

evolution is easy to understand .... Christians are clean & pure so would't want to be on a dirty hot / cold at times planet / and there were no supermarkets for christians to buy bread and wine from... also there were no seas where jesus & his pals could catch fishes from... and no churches where christians could priase their benevolent creator.... one day god had an idea, he put some monkey ape things on earth to build all the nice things for christians... when they'd done this god used mystical technology to create a perfect man & woman they were teleported to earth to populate the planet with nice blood realated beings ... who were called christians... when the christians got fed up of the ape thingys god made it rain a lot and there was a big flood & when the waters dispersed the ape-things were gone... leaving only the nice christians behind to pray & frollick ....

The more intelligent ones (for instance - Catholics) believe science and realize that a day to God could be a billion years to us and that evolution was the way that God made all that is.

This is, of course, what I believe - only without the God part.

Yeah!

In fact, the world began in 1961, the year I was born, because it would have been utterly pointless for there to have been a world before that.

And if you think I'm buying that "other continents" thing, you're nuts. The entire planet is right here, and don't you forget it!

What is time to a spirit?

A trillion years or a nanosecond are the exact same thing to God.

(will you now post: 'How do Christians defend the Solar System?').

They get around that fact and maintain the delusion of their beliefs by believing that the world is about 6000 years old.
