My dad has been acting different the last few years. It is very hard to have a real conversation with him. He will usually talk about 2 or 3 different things at once and most of the time he doesnt even make sense. He likes to start arguments over nothing and then later changes the subject to something totally different. Many people try avoiding him because he talks nonsense nobody wants to hear. He has recently started a collection of junk he does not need and is only getting bigger. He was recently diagnosed with diabetes and severe depression. He is 54 years old. Is this some kind of mental illness we should be worried about or does the depression have anything to do with it?

My father was the same way when he was alive. The " multiple " topics in conversation at the same time just explain how many thoughts he has going on in his brain at any given moment. " it's tough to explain, but it does make sense.

His collecting things, " junk " my father filled his house with crap, mp3 players, dvd players, any toy nick nack that A) made him rember his past and B) forget about life long enough to enjoy the toy, or item.

he was depressed, and drank heavily. it ended in liver failure and a 3 am phone call from the hospital.

Just remember you will never fully understand anyone, even if they are family, remembwr you cant change people, or make them see the way you do.

If your worried, bring it up to him and if anything else, care for him like there is no tomorrow .

Many blessings.,

Depression IS mental illness. The stronger it takes hold of a person, the more areas of a person's life are altered by it. Thinking and reasoning can be distorted. Attitudes and moods can change quickly, and without much reason for it. Having a physical illness can also be disruptive to the mental health of a person, and can complicate what is going on inside of his head.
Medications for one disease can also have side effects on people's moods or thought process, exaserbating another illness present.

Consider notifying his Dr. of your concerns. His Dr can make a mental health referral to see that he is assessed.

Can be depression or early onset of Altzheimers Disease. Your mom should probably make him an appointment with his doctor and go with him and explain this to the doctor. In either case there is now medication that can stop or greatly reduce this. Please have testing done to make sure which it is and then make sure he gets medicine and therapy.
