There might be a waiting list for female assignment to the Hospital Corps at this time. The Dental Technician rate was combined with HM a while back, so a lot of folks had to "double bunk" as it were to continue their careers. Over the past dozen years a lot of potential assignment areas have been closed or downgraded in function. That would include Naval Hospitals which would have served as shore duty for many in that rate, both male and female.
You might want to touch base with a female recruiter in the Navy. That person can give you a better handle on the manning situation in that rate.

True, it is harder for females than males right now, due to the fact that HM's are desperately needed in Iraq. It is definitely not impossible for a female to secure a spot in the HM rate, though. Quotas open and close for all rates, so if you do well on the ASVAB and qualify for HM, dont let your recruiter bully you into taking another rate just so he can get you signed up. Tell him that you are willing to wait for an opening in the HM rate. Good luck...

first check with your requiter, they can give u some idea. the more females that go in the more males it releases for combat duty as fleet marines. need changes every year so just keep checking. If you have a Naval Reserve close to you call and see if they have a medical unit and then go talk to some of the female HM's

In the Army, depending on how well you score on the ASVAB, you would have Choice of MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) in WRITING before you sign your contract. You could also qualify for choice of training duty station, and up to a $40,000 cash enlistment bonus.
