Go through your normal warm up routine, just like you do for practice.
Don't take any short cuts.
Visualize your event. See yourself winning.
Close your eyes and relax.
Take deep, smooth, breaths.
Remember that you are running because you enjoy to run, so you should have fun regardless of what happens.
You are running against yourself, you can not control what others do, you can only control what you do.
If you work hard in practice the races are the easy part.

Try visualization. You need to see yourself running the way you want to run and crossing the finish line. Do this every day and before you go to bed at night. There's an article in Runners World about this. Look for the back issue from a month or two ago. If you are really serious about this you can try lucid dreaming - another form of visualization. This is also discussed in the article. Actually, I think I found the link. Check it out.

Then you probably aren't doing the best you could do, either. Sounds like a concentration and focus problem to me. YOu need to talk to your coach and explain what you have told us and ask his/her help on getting into concentration & focus before events. Maybe you have a friend on the team or coach can suggest a "focus partner" so that you can put your anxiety energy into planning and running the events.
Good Luck

Just remember that most people feel the exact same way you do. I remember when I used to do Cross Country many years ago, I always had knots in my stomach, and an almost overwhelming feeling. My coach told me to just relax (easy for him to say!) and to feel this way because 90% of all runners feel this way. It helped me. I hope it helps you. BB

you have to channel your energy like put that paranoia into getting you hyped and excited before the game! For instance in your head repeat something over and over like I 'm number 1 or I will beat you!
