They told me to pick 3 places I would like to go and they would see if I would be needed in any of those 3, if not then the Army chooses.
I wanted Germany and I got it. I was from Hawaii and I knew there were no tanks in Hawaii, so I didn't bother picking there.
It all depends on your MOS and where you are needed.

I have been in the Army for 21 Years and have always gotten the duty station I enlisted for or reenlisted for (reenlisted 3 times). At enlistment, you can sometimes be guaranteed this in your contract based on MOS [example: no tankers in Hawaii]; and at reenlistment- your chances are higher.

To most of the people answering this question your recruiters suck.
You can get duty station of choice in your contract but make sure you see it in writing!
The army needs people so bad you can get what you want.
Make sure it is in writing!!!!!
Make sure it is in writing!!!!!!!
You can also enlist with some rank if you pass a pt test and learn your rank structure And the military alphabet.
Ask your recruiter about it and for some study guides.

If you allow the US Army chose for you then you could end up in a great place. I did when I was in Germany and had a great time. I enjoyed Illesheim, Bremmen, and Ratisbon Germany
I am so poor now that I cant afford a two year vacation in Germany.

You get a wish list lol. Once at a duty station you can put in a 4187 to request a change of duty station however the needs of the Army come first.

You can, but it doesn't happen often. You have to get it IN WRITING from your recruiter.
Otherwise, you'll get the b.s. wishlist at basic - but you are more likely to get hit by a bus during basic training than you are to get stationed at a place on your wishlist.
You can still get a bonus, too. You have to treat enlisting like a used car deal - they need you more than you need them. Tell them you're going to talk to the Air Force and you'll be surprised at your results. Trust me, I did it. I got Hawai'i, where I am still, and I got a $9K bonus for my MOS.

Yes, but 9 chances out of 10 you won't be able to pick your FIRST duty station. When you sign your contract, you pick your job, then you can pick choice of training site.

22 years on active duty and one time I actually got my choice, sort of. I was on advance orders to Ft Riley and requested Europe.
My orders were changed to Germany.
Again that was one time in 22 years. the rest of the time I never saw my dream sheet assignments.

Only if you take it as in enlistment option (normally in lieu of a Bonus, and the Bonuses are fairly big now so I would not recommend it).
