im an ex-scientologist.

A good "religion" for the impoverished?
Yeah I guess so. The religion part is actually pretty bland. Its non-denominational (meaning anyone, christian, muslem, jewish, whatever can attend services). They dont pass a plate or hint that you should donate 10% of your earnings to the church like many of the better known religions. All they do is wish good will to people in distasters, ask for old canned goods or used cloths for them, ask for people to join the disaster teams. So yeah I guess its a pretty good religion for the impoverished.

If you mean the courses they offer?
Yes Id have to say yes to that also. Taking the first course on better communications would be a huge help in the job market for most people. Its only like $50 which is pretty good for what is basically a college level course. The next one on better studying could be a big help on many jobs for anyone shooting for a management position in their company. Im not sure if the later ones on peer pressure or getting off drugs and alcohol or personal counseling would be any good but I guess so if the person feels they need it.

According to the anti-scientology sites, something like 72% of people just take the first couple of courses and then leave. They never actually change their religion answer on forms or census to say "scientology".

Nope. "Doing" Scientology is quite expensive. If you walk in and have money, they will fawn all over you and pretend to be your best friend. If you walk in looking poor, they will query why you're there and try to get you to join staff -- where you will be worked very hard and be paid a mere pittance, like $50/week for 50-70 hours of work, and I'm not kidding! Been there. Done that.

It's not a religion at all. It's a dangerous cult posing as a religion to gain credibility from the public. They will tell you that you don't have to have money to join scientology but that's when it really gets bad. They'll tell you to join their Sea Organization which means working for them. People with no money live in hideous housing, they get horrible food, they work their asses off and get paid about $10 a week; if that much. It's very much like a slave labor camp. They'll say if you work for them then you can get your classes and auditing for free. But what they DON'T tell you is that if you want to leave someday you have to pay them back thousands of dollars for the auditing you received.

There's much, much more to tell you but I don't want to type that much so go to Operation Clambake at www.xenu.net or Xenu TV at www.xenutv.com, which is all videos by ex-members who tell their stories about what it was like in the cult. You'll learn all you need to know from those sites

No, it is not. It is not a good religion for the impoverished because it's not a good religion period. The primary reason it isn't a good religion is that it is made up out of whole cloth. It's the complete moral equivalent to believing in The Force from StarWars. It may make a great science fiction story, but to base one's life on it is foolishness.

They are all around where I live. Most of them seem to be college people which I guess is not totally impoverished. But it sure isn't rich either.

I went to some of their sunday services. Seemed cheaper than most churches. You didn't have to get so dressed up and they didn't pass around a collection plate.

if you read Ron.L.Hubbard's book you might see the real philosophy behind Scientology and there is nothing wrong with it. It is a science of the mind. The scientology church is corrupt not the idea...

1 - it's not a religion, it's a philosophy

2 - I agree with another poster; Dianetics is interesting, but the organization is horrible and dangerous

3 - you have to buy their "system" and each level costs tens of thousands of dollars. You are much less attractive if you have NO money, believe me.

It is the most obscene, ridiculous and abominable term that anyone calls a "religion" and is only for the rich, like Tom Cruise who jumped the couch over his "faith".
