ummm...I was against the war in Iraq from the get-go and neutral on the war in Afghanistan (at least that one was logical and justified...)

But, given that I lost that vote, I would have to say a qualified "yes." Morally, we cannot just cut and run. So, if we can bring some reasonable level of stability for a reasonable period of time (10ish years), then it is the right thing to do. And more importantly, if it can be done, it would be the best thing for US, the West, and the Iraqis and the worst possible result for our enemies.

So you've got my "yes" but don't forget to ask me if I think we can win it...(no) 'cause that's the way I'm going to vote... unless you convince me otherwise.

Iraq is the American fundamentalists attacking the Muslim fundamentalists because the Muslim fundamentalists attacked them. Lather, rinse, repeat. The problem is that the American fundamentalists attacked the countries they could instead of the the country that is the source of the majority of the 9/11 terrorists. The problem for the atheists is whoever wins will probably not be happy killing just the fundamentalists of the opposing religion. Religion, regardless of the belief system, is irrational. Atheists can not reason with irrational people and certainly can't reason with someone who thinks that the world will be a better place if everyone agreed with them. Christopher Hitchens is correct that the current conflict is basically religious in nature and that it may not end without an enormous amount of bloodshed. The middle east the the perfect storm waiting to happen. Religion, oil and weapons all converging to create the end of the world just because that's what's written in their book and God will be on their side. Too bad there is no God to come down and settle the whole thing before it's too late.

There really is no way for the US to win this war . In ousting Saddam they already achieved their objective . Now the US needs to find a way out without allowing an Islamic Civil War to errupt . This would make the USA the subject of much more criticism . The only way for the USA to "win" now is to make sure the Iraq Government Forces are stronger than the insurgents so that a relative peace can come to the country .
What the USA wanted to "win" was an Iraq government that was more friendly to the USA / England /France and less friendly towards terrorists .

I would prefer the Iraqi civilians to win for once,if it is,nt oil its opium, greed and the struggle to control the wealth available is costing us all very dear. They will only get peace with another very strong man like Sadaam Hussein, these people will always fight each other the same as every one else does. The biggest crime of all is to use the religion to manipulate the people, but this is happening all over the world now,its a good thing that most moslems and christians are too intelligent to be swayed.SHAWN B MAKES A GOOD POINT THERE.

NO.

I want those poor kids to "get the Hell out of Dodge", before any MORE lose lives and parts over a worthless war in a country which loathes the American invaders anyway!
The only way to truly "Win" in Iraq is to send George W. Bush there with a uniform on, and get what's left of Our guys HOME!!!

War?

I thought we'd had "mission accomplished" and "major combat operations in Iraq have ended"

Or was that just more spin and propaganda?

I would like to see a positive resolution to the utter mess created by the unnecessary, wrong and illegal invasion of Iraq.
I'm not sure the Iraqi government is, or can be, sufficiently strong and united to withstand the pressures to fragmentation and internal conflict that now exist.

What on earth did the USA think it was doing?
I'm a Brit who marched against the war before it happened.
(And I never march!).

We already won the war in Iraq by getting Saddam Hussein out of power. (remember that he snubbed his nose at the U.N. for 12 YEARS - a fact that most people tend to forget!)
Our leaders (cough) miscalculated though thinking that everyone would be happy when he was kicked out.
What we need to do now is to "try" to stabilize the region by letting the IRAQIS (not the religious extremists) understand that our intentions of stabilization are in their best interests and we're not out to control them or their country....or for that sake, their oil.
So "winning" is not the problem anymore.... it's stabilizing the region that is important. People wanting the troops to come home are either just being selfish or just jumping on the peacenick band wagon to get attention. I say keep them their until the job is done! signed an atheist, veteran and patriot.

I'd like the US to win but it won't. My country may claim a victory but in 3 months after we leave it will be back to where it was before. The US hasn't won a real war since WW ll. Korea is under an armistice. and we lost in Vietnam. I've seen newsreel footage of North Vietnamese tanks knocking down the gate at the US embassy in Saigon as the last US helicopter lifted off. That's a defeat folks.

What has atheism got to do with winning or losing a war? Many atheists are patriots and are good soldiers. We love the nation as much as any so-called religious people do. There are religious people out there who don't want the U.S. to win the war.

Nobody 'wins' any war. Just wish the politicans would back down, eat humble pie, wipe the egg from their faces and get ALL our and US personell back home safely asap. Soldiers are not political pawns, they are Country defenders.
