If you consider Russia as part of Europe, then Russia. Russia has the 2nd most powerful military in the world, 1st place being the USA.

The german army is probably the most powerful by shere weight of armour, artillery and infantry, but because it is much less mobile than the french or british army it has less impact. the luftwaffe is pretty powerful as a close air support/interdiction/SEAD/reece airforce, though its air defence force is built around the ageing F-4F Phantom - though it is equiped with AIM120 AMRAAM missiles making it a good long-range BVR interceptor.

The French and British airforces are roughly equal, the french being more prevailant in air-defence and the British angled more towards interdiction, close air support, reece and SEAD.

The french navy is bigger than the RN, but the RN has much greater amphibious and littoral capability while the french have a more 'blue-water' stand alone capability.

France and the UK have similar sized nuclear capabilities in terms of number of warheads, but the UK's are all based on trident submarines whereas france's are spread through submarines and aircraft - they certainly used to have land-based surface to surface nukes, but i'm not sure what the position is now.

Yes, Germany has an army, and it is one of the most powerful armies in Europe, 2007. Many people seem to think they arn't allowed an Army after WW2, this is incorrect.

Numbers wise, the Germans still have conscription. Russian is not part of Western Europe. France is pretty well set up but the Brits have the edge. 1968 is the only year since 1945 where a Brit has not been killed in action, that gives them a lot of experience. The current situation in Iraq and Afghanistan is the best war fighting training any European Army has had in decades. Don't believe the underfunding arguments straight off, the Brits have some pretty neat kit deployed. They may not be up to US standards, but they are way beyond the rest of Western Europe kit-wise. It is battle tested. The French do not have bigger arms sales than Britain. BAe has bought big into the US market and supplies kit to the US Army that is made in America by companies owned by BAe. When BAe and VT tie the know that will be one big company with world wide clout.

Although the USA is not in Europee, It is one of the most powerful military forces in the world. As the USA has bases in Europe, that would qualify to make it the most powerful military force in Europe.
Second being Russia. Europe is defined by the Ural Mountains which are East of Moscow. So Geographically Russia is in Asia and Europe.

The British army is the most highly trained army in the world, it is a professional army and is supplemented by the reserve, they also operate the Challenger II mbt which has never had one knoecked out in combat and is the best tank in the world

The royal navy has both SSBN and SSN submarines and will soon be equiped with 2 aircraft cariers to replace the one which operate sea harriers

The RAF operates the Tornado, Jaguar, Harrier and also now the Tornado Eurofighter.

So in technical terms the British army is the best in Europe although it is one of the smallest we can more than hold our own

That depends what do you mean by most powerful? In numbers defiantly Russia (yes it is in Europe). But no one can conquer Switzerland (there people keep tanks in their own garages so response time is quick.
