My 12 week old Jack Russell puppy has recently started really chowing on his food. He no longer chews as he is eating, and often starts to cough while eating. Does anyone have any insight as to how I can get him to slow down while eating?

Note on feeding: We are currently feeding him 1/3 cup of food 3 times per day. 6:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 6:30 pm

We are feeding him dry nutro puppy food. Also, he does not have any aggression issues when it comes to feeding.

What are you feeding him?
Try moistening his food, if dry.

You can purchase a bowl that is designed to slow a dog down if he's a really fast eater, or you can feed him a little bit at a time, like a few nuggets each time. You'll find that if he's eating that fast he will not get enough nutrients in his diet because he'll end up pooping out more than he retains. This can lead to eating his own poop as it'll smell more like his food than his poop if he's eating his food whole.

he is at the state now where you need to only feed him 2 times and when he begins to get a month or 2 then feed him 1 times a day because your puppy will get fat sooner or later and all puppies do that it is normal that means that are excited over the food plus jack Russel and rottweilers and pit bulls never chew their food because they have big throats and don't need to chew perfectly normal happy new year

Not chewing is OK. they have great digestive systems. But do watch for food aggression and that should be addressed so he doesn't bite someone.

Add dry large chunk kibble to the canned food. This will please you, however he is a dog and dogs gulp by nature so their litter mates won't steal their food! Hope this helps him to slow down.!
