I was dissatisfied with the answers given here, so I researched more on-line. Three possible outcomes result from withholding "flatus," or flatulence.
1. A little bit escapes through the ***.
2. A little bit returns to the small intestine, where it is either absorbed by accumulating fecal matter, or where it reenters the bloodstream and is cleansed from the system in other ways -- you can actually breathe it out!
