I was dissatisfied with the answers given here, so I researched more on-line. Three possible outcomes result from withholding "flatus," or flatulence.

1. A little bit escapes through the ***.
2. A little bit returns to the small intestine, where it is either absorbed by accumulating fecal matter, or where it reenters the bloodstream and is cleansed from the system in other ways -- you can actually breathe it out!

Fascinating. Indeed.

It starts up a rumble in the tummy and after awhile begins to hurt.

As everyone else says it has to come out eventually.

Have you heard babies cry with wind? It is a bit like that. The bubble gas can get caught in the area and unless expelled will keep increasing.

No, it doesn't mean you'll blow up like a balloon and float away, but it does mean you could be in for a bit of "wind" pain for awhile.

Some people ease that by drinking fizzy drink straight from the bottle, causing king sized burps - which can be just as annoying - albeit less odorous.

It just comes back stronger in a little bit. Best to excuse yourself to the bathroom or outside and let it go when it wants to come out!
