We have two English Bulldogs. The male (8 yrs old) goes absolutely ballistic when I cough. He's only been doing this for the last year (I've been around him for 4 years). The female could care less.

Strangely, when my wife coughs, he doesn't react at all. Just when I do it. I'd like some answers from people who have real experience with this, rather than just guesses ... and yes, he barks at a lot of noises and is a fairly anxious dog.

Thanks!

Your voice I bet is lower in pitch. Your dog thinks you are trying to dominate him. the lower a dog barks the more aggressive the dogs mood is. You should try to dominate your dog more. He thinks he is higher than you. He probably shows more signs of this-does he lean agianst you?
Does he paw you?
does he bark and growl when you eat?
does he get through the door before you?
Get the best spot on the sofa?
These are signs that he is trying to dominate you. Get a book or search on the web on how to dominate a dog.

Could be your couch is on a decibel level that bothers his ear and then again he may be hearing something in your cough that worries him. When was the last time you went to the doctors for a check up. Have him pay special attention to your lungs. Do you do much dairy in your diet, leave of the dairy for 2 to 3 weeks and see if your couch changes or goes away. Many dogs are so turned to their owners bodies that they can detect a coming heart attack, an insulin change, the smell of cancer...so pay attention to him...please.

Your cough must sound like a bark...your voice is (I am assuming) deeper than your wife's...:) or, something about the timbre of the sound excites him. My pit bull puppy barks when people shovel...something about the scraping of the shovel on the ground gets her into a tizzy. Who knows what they are thinking...

My dog doesn't like certain sounds. It all depends on the dog. I have 3 minature pincers and they all react to different noises. One doesn't like sneezing, two don't like the sound of tv tray's folding in the upright position, and one doesn't like the sound of door bells.
