As long as Hinduism has existed....Hinduism can be considered an atheist religion...The most important doctrine of Hinduism is the vedas....In the vedas, it is clearly taught that one does not achieve moksha (the buddhist equivalent of nirvana) by worshipping deities but by freeing himself/herself from the cycle of reincarnation....This journey is an individual journey that the soul must take by themself.....Hinduism in terms of its content is a truly massive religion...It is probably bigger than Islam, christianity and judaism put together...There are over 50 bibles, many different ways to worship and many different ways to be a hindu....From the start there have been many hindus that have not worshipped the vedic deities....Such as when you go to an ashram, seldom will you find idols there (they will only be found in temples)...The misconception that many people have is that they assume God/Goddess worship is a requisite to the Hindu faith...In the Gita Krishna himself said that many deities can also become slave of the human emotions and can get caught in "maya" (illusion).

There are several schools within Hinduism that are no different from atheistic philosophy.....Many people proudly claim to be Hindu atheists....atheism is an ideology that is perfectly commensurate and compatible with Hinduism....

So in answer to your Q, it really does depend on how old the Vedas is....According to Hinduism, the vedas is as old as creation....there have been a number of estimates (all scientifically argued)...that range from 1400BC to 80 000BC. The methods that are used to ascertain the age of the vedas include carbon dating and astronomy...Carbon dating is a method used by geologists to ascertain the age of rocks. As for astronomy, the vedas make specific references to certain constellations that did in fact, according to astronomers, exist at a time way back in the depths of time....

I don't think that atheism is acceptable in Hinduism, but maybe I'm misunderstanding your question. Hinduism involves the worship of and belief in many gods - that is definitely not atheism!

Are you asking whether Hindus are tolerant of atheists? I'm not sure what your question really is here. Can you please elaborate?

EDIT:
Aha! Thanks for telling me. You learn something new every day! Hinduism is something I would really like to learn more about. Do you have any recommendations on where to start? You can email me through my profile.
