YES, DT, I do agree that there should be a mandatory jail sentence. If there was something draconian as a result of violating the law, they would be less likely to. Now, with just deportation, way too many can sneak back in and be back at their lives without much of hiccup.
Jail time would definitely slow them down a bit.

No, it would not be much of a deterrent. Imagine, however, if we pay $100/ day in prison time. Even if we add 30 days, so $3,000 per person apprehended. At about 500,000 per year, we would pay $1,500,000,000 ($1.5 Billion) annually to detain them. Also, the new prison construction that would be necessary would be a ridiculous waste of time. A better investment: $1.5 billion in micro-lending in Mexico. Give money for small businesses to get started. Job growth in Mexico would diminish the push to the United States.
In point of fact, they do have a consequence: anyone found here a second time suffers a lifetime bar on legally immigrating to the United States.

Out of dollars, hombre. It would mean more deficit spending to keep feeding them in jail even it it were a tent city in Death Valley. Just do not have the jack. Congress and lobbyists have managed to spend us back to become the no. 1 debtor nation. Didn't you know that?

Not financially viable in the West, but some countries in S.E. Asia lock you up for every day you`ve over stayed.

Well I think putting them to work during their sentence similar to what you see inmates doing sometimes. Cleaning up trash on roadsides for instance would be more like it.

As long as the prison they are sent to has a labor program, you know, chain gangs and such. We should use these illegals the same way they use our country. We should be able to get something out of them like they got out of us. It is only fair. Lock'em up and put 'em to work!!!

We need mexico, not mexicans, to join the U.S. ecomomy compleatley to decrease national debt. We need an invasion of the mexican workforce into the U.S. to increase the productivity of the U.S. so that we do not have the need to go into debt for all of the things we import. If we don;t shake hands in the next 50 years we'll go into a depression.
