Or is it possible to have them delay a refund check - ask for documentation of deductions and then after satisfactory conclusion/evidence, they send me my refund check?

THANKS!

Their people have plenty to do during the filing season. They like to get the refunds and collections out of the way. THEN, they start with the audits.
If they'd do the audits before issuing refunds, it would take months, maybe years, until you see your refund. That would betotally unfair to the great percentage of those filing who have absolutely no reason to be audited.

Your terminology is off. When the CP2000 program runs, if it interprets the k-1 as you indicate as a loss, it will calculate tht you might have owed less tax and is not supposed to send mail. An audit is when the IRS believes you have mistated income and owe--and it's a little more in depth than just matching documents. Having gotten a refund/or being owed one does not prevent an audit.

Audits are after a return is filed unless you are supposed to file and don't. Usually you get your refund check and then are audited later, but depending on the situation, they might hold your refund until the issues are resolved.
