To look like u'r on a muscel magazine you eithor have to be taking steriods or uber-mega special diet & intense training.
The more muscel you use, the more calories you burn. So, weight lifting will cause the fastest way to get to smaller clothing sizes.

First, to get the "macho" look, and I am not sure what you mean exactly, but the huge body-builder muscles come with time and the right DNA make-up. It would take years to go from zero to over-trained.
If you want to avoid the bulk and build lean muscle mass use low weight and high repetitions. Meaning weights you take lift 25-30 times during a set, with two sets a session.
Add cardio, that will lean you out, and keep off the bulk. Think running and biking, look at those guys bodies, lean muscle, not a lot of bulk.
Best of luck.

Getting macho looking muscles takes a lot of effort. Regular cardio and light weights will tone your body without giving you a muscle bound look. You don't say whether or not you are a woman, but if you are there is very little chance of that in the first place. Regardless, having muscle tone and strength is very good for your long-term fitness and health - on top of looking really good.

LOL if only it were so easy to get muscles!!!
Just work out, do whatever you want with weights, treadmill, etc.
Packing on the muscle is super hard to do without steroids, so don't worry about it. You'll get healthy and you will NEVER look like the guys in the muscle mags.

Yea..just by walking on treadmill/runnning will not get you that sixpack. Doing a huge number of crunches, pushups, adn weights will get you the six pack. So..just eat healthy and work out from time to time and you'll be looking healthy and great.

Depending on your metabolisim, you may not have to worry about gaining too much muscle.
I work at a store moving heavy stuff around all the time. I'm fit, yet I don't look bowed up. Yet i still manage to toss around 60lb bags of dog food like pillows.
If you find that you're gaining too much muscle try limiting your protien intake.

Try jogging, swimming or something similar.
If you want to do weights then don't lift any heavy weights as this will 'tone up' your body, stick with smaller weights and work on your cardio.
Your best bet really is swimming as this works most of you muscles without building them up.

I work out and I have very little muscle. (joking)..
but seriously folkes, they say about 50 % of men die as a result of some cardiovascular disease - heart attack, stroke, COPD, etc. They say that cardiovascular exercise is MOST important for men. If you do cardio work you will burn fat, improve your cardio vasc. fitness, raise you metabolism, have more energy, and generally you dont get big muscles --just look at Lance Armstrong.
