Hi - I have brought my 3 kids on 4 cruises now. I have always made sure they could do things on their own or doing things as a family. So they wouldn't feel like they had to choose one or the other. Carnival Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean and Disney I would say are the top three for kids. Age 12 is a funny age, some kids are more mature and others younger. If yours loves the wonder of Disney - it has allot to offer with all their characters. For a more adventurous kid I would go for Royal Caribbean with their rock walls, flow riders, putt putt golf. Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Disney all have kids clubs targeted for age appropriate groupings so they'll meet other kids their own age they can hang out with if they can't take another moment with the parental units.
All 3 of my kids have taken advantage of the kids clubs but enjoyed the island/land tours we did as a family. All three cruise lines have pages and pages of things to do for any age while on a cruise. Even the days at sea can be fun for everyone no matter what age.

What you should do is go to the library and borrow some books about cruising, to an idea of what's involved and what the options are. There are so many variables.
You could also browse on CruiseCritic.com; click on "Boards" and "Reviews" for lots of information about cruising from experts and also from past guests. This site might be more useful once you have more of an idea of what cruising involves and what areas you need more information about.
Cruises are lots of fun and the "mass-market" cruises cater to families, for the most part. Carnival or Royal Caribbean might be especially good; Disney, too, although that is a pricier line than the others [they only have two ships, so there's less "supply" for the "demand".]
Hope you find a cruise that's just right for you and your family!

I live on Carnival Cruise ships and I would say for the money, Carnival is a good cruise for the kids. Camp Carnival is a great service running all day and most of the night. Of course you have Disney but much more expensive...

Disney is one of the most expensive. Carnival has great rates and things for kids including baby sitting for your night out. I'd love to help, you can call me at 877-226-5901 or just pull up the crusie options on my site. Your choices usually start at about 70% off brochure rate.
Don't forget to sign up for the special "deals and steals" newletter and I'll send you some specials once in a while. Laura

cruises are great, i would suggest going on a Dinsey Cruise is you want to take your 12 yr old because sh would enjoy it and she would be able to hang out in an area with a bunch of other kids her age. I went on one a couple years ago courtesy of Make-A-Wish foundation and i had the time of my life

I went on one once with Royal Carribian. EVERYTHING was included except the drinks and it was really awesome. I would take a kid on one of the Disneys cruises. The one I was on catered more to adult activities. One of my friends that went with us was sick to death from motion sickness the whole time. so be aware of that!
Have fun
