i recently bought an acer desktop and it came with vista. i had always used xp and vista was new to me. i also heard people were downgrading to xp and it took up like 3/4 of the space on the comp. so i downloaded Team Fortress 2 on it and i started to play it it was laggy as anything! i knew it wasn't the graphics card because i had used the same one in an xp comp and it worked fine. my brother said it was just because vista was terrible and it took up all the ram space. so what i'm asking is should i downgrade to xp or buy another stick of ram to play those tf2,cod4, etc. type of games?

adding memory is always a good option.however if you can downgrade to xp for free then you can do it,although you might have problems finding drivers for your system bec it came originally with vista.i suggest for you to just upgrade the hw of the system, its easier and has much more benefits in the long run, even if it doesn't work you'll still have a much faster system or maybe sell the new memory.vista also has a higher video card requirement than xp.

I would say go with atleast 2GB of ram for any new game, XP or vista. It's true that right now vista is a touch slower for gaming. It hasn't had the time yet for driver makers to optimize their code. think of how long XP has been out vs how long vista has been out. XP wasn't a peach when it first came out either.
We need to also clear out this rumor of Vista needing a ton of RAM. People see that vista is using a lot of their ram and immediatly think it's a RAM hog. what vista does is it keeps frequently used programs in the RAM so that when you click to load up that program is loads faster. If a program requires RAM that vista has loaded with another thing vista offloads that and gives it to the currently running program. So Vista does "use" a lot of RAM, but it's not hogging it, it's actually making your experience faster.
Give vista some time it's a great OS, it just needs for people to have some patience while minor bumps are ironed out.

You need to add a lot of RAM if you're running Vista. I have XP but I've heard that it takes a lot of RAM. I've also heard that many people are going back to XP even if they add RAM because they just like XP better.

If the game you want to play is Vista compatible, I recommend adding RAM. Vista's actually a cool o/s if you have the hardware on which to run it.
