The question, typed with limited detail, may need a better explanation.

I just received a 40 GB Playstation 3. In addition to buying some PS3 games, I also plan on buying some Playstation 1 games I haven't played before. The PS3 box claims that I can play these PS1 games on my PS3. What it does not say is whether I will need a PS1 memory card in order to save my data or not. Furthermore, it does not say if I will need anything else for the PS1 games, such as a PS1 controller or any other PS1 device.

First you need to buy a Memory Card adapter for the PS3 to create an internal memory card, but to create the internal PS1 memory card you need to actually have a PS1 memory card.

I copied all of my PS1 and PS2 memory card save data to my 60GB PS3 by using the Memory Card adapter.

You do not have to have a PS1 controller to play PS1 games on the PS3, you can use the PS3's controller.

It saves in the hard drive. You just have to set one up on the ps3. There's an option under the Game Section. If you want to transfer existing saved data from your old ps1 or ps2 memory card, then you can purchase the memory card reader.

no you will create what's called an "internal memory card" which stores your PS1 saves on your hard disc. Your sixaxis controller will will work fine, it just won't, of course, have the rumble feature.
