The Mason Dixon line's original purpose was as a property line. It separated the property of the Penn family (present day Pennsylvania and Delaware) from the property of the Calvert family (Marlyand). The Calvert family claimed that Philadelphia was part of their property, and therefore Maryland. It's not a straight line as it has a right angle that travels south to the Trans-Peninsular Line, which forms the southern border of Delaware.

In the early 1800's, it was used to separate free states from slave states. Today it separates Maryland from Pennsylvania on the north and Delaware on the east.
