It seems like my dog can accurately anticipate which way I'm going to go when I'm chasing him around...so it's as if he can picture me making one move and always seems to be a step ahead of me. Is his imagination kicking into gear when he anticipates my movements or is it more instinct driven? And what about when he has vivid dreams, where he whines and his legs and paws twitch as if he's playing or running?

No, but dogs are great readers of body language so he can anticipate which way you will go!

It is being learned more and more how much they actually do understand. I watched my small puppy (Queensland Heeler) problem solve when he was only 4 weeks old. He would study a situation and figure out how to do it with the most accuracy. He might try two or three things before he got it right, but he would sit and look at the situation and you could see his little brain trying to figure it out.
He makes up games and takes us to the back yard to do the game and he changes the rules from time to time. I caught him trying to teach our old cocker spaniel how to play soccer with the tennis ball. He gave up because the cocker wanted no part of a new game, but it was fun to watch.
My cocker spaniel (when we first got him) had night mares and would wake up screaming. We assumed he had been abused. Now in his old age he is having night mares again, I think with his mental deterioration like in humans he is remember things from his youth.???
If you are trying to point out something to a dog he will quickly look to you and see where you are pointing.

Dogs dream, just like humans do. You could infer that dreaming is imagining, and thus dogs do have an imagination.
