No very close - thats why we dont need intermediaters
From the Quran

"And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way. (2:168)

50:16 We created man and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.

God is closer to people than they think. In fact, Allah (swt) says in the Qur'an that he is closer to us than our jugular vein:

In the Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

It was We Who created man, and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him: for We are nearer to him than (his) jugular vein.
-Qur'an [50:16]

Interesting question.

Answers from Christians who don't know about the origins of their own religions don't count right?

I am guessing that they believe that God is very close. It takes an incredible amount of faith to feel good about your son being a martyr, or to kill yourself in the name of your God. I would guess that anyone who is willing to detonate a bomb strapped to themselves feels awful close to God when it comes time to hit the button.

I could be wrong though.

Allah is a works-based god. There is no assurance of salvation which is why some need to do jihad to have a "free pass" to paradise, or why they HAVE to pray "so many times" a day.

The God of the Bible is a grace and mercy-based God. There was no way we could work our way to heaven. So God sent His only Son in to the world to take the punishment onto Himself. THAT'S the gospel.

Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Though they may not admit it, islam teaches that allah may take a liking to you or not. If allah LIKES you (based on how well you obey and other criteria), he MIGHT allow you to enter into paradise. The only absolute SURE FIRE way of entering paradise is to kill some infidel. Otherwise, it's a very chancy, maybe type of religion.

They believe in the god of the scales. If their bad outweigh their good by 1 deed, they go to hell. Otherwise they get to hang out with their god in paradise. Of course their paradise is nothing more than sexual perversion. hmmm... I'd rather stick to Christianity.
