Um, don't. Leave them alone.

And how does this pertain to religion?

The problem is in the "approach". Birds instinctively avoid anything larger than them approaching them. You have nothing to offer that a bird would be interested in.

You want birds to approach YOU. And for that to happen, you have to be completely non-threatening. Birds have two basic non-procreative interests, food and safety. If you have food, you must be safe. That means you can make no motions that can become dangerous to them, preferably no motion at all. And you can't be near other threatening things. Birds prefer open spaces where they can kep an eye out for predators.

Having food may help attract them, but it can also make them wary. They need a reason to choose you over, say, a tree, statue or telephone wire. Consider investing in a good pair of binoculars.

Shotguns are quick and effective. Assuming the shot is moving faster than sound, the bird will not be frightened at all.

Put bird seed in the palm of your open hand, and lay your hand down on the ground, palm up. Let the birds come to you.
