are we supposed to give everyweek or everytime we get paid? If its 10% what if i make a huge salary every pay period. Do i have too give such a large sum to the one church i go to or can give it to other churches or people in need. Is giving to charity the same as offering or tithes?

Tithing is a freedom not a responsibility.

God blesses with all things, giving back to support those who preach, support and dedicate their lives to God's people is a freedom we have to help those dedicated people to focus on the work of God instead of concerns for earning a living elsewhere.

We take tithing a little less seriously than the biblical example. We think monthly income, the Jews tithed from their GROSS worth.

If you earn a large sum, be generous, 10% won't hurt you.

The tithe goes to the church you worship at-no where else. Offerings go anywhere.
In the Old Testament a tithe was 10% of your increase. In the new Testament we are only commanded to give as we feel the Lord leads us. Some give nothing, because they have nothing, then some give 1%, others 10% yet others who have been extremely blessed give 90%.
Since the church is not a commercial enterprise-it has no income. The local church can not survive with out the support of the local congregation. Some churches seem to have an abundance-but most struggle to pay the light bill, and the pastors do not receive a salary.

Sister,
I find it odd that this many people are still going from the Old Testament Commands that were given to the Israelites. The first century Christians gave "as they were prospered on the first day of the week". This is found in the New Testament scriptures and I follow the New Testament not what GOD told the Israelites to do prior to Christ's Resurrection and ascension. HIS CHURCH began at Pentecost in Acts 2:38. Have a great week and a wonderful New Year.
Thanks,
Eds

How To Pay Tithes

There are various forms of tithes and offerings: Maaser rishon- the first 10% of the crops- given to the Kohanim (Priests) and Levi'im Maaser Sheni - alternates with this going either to the Levi'im or to the poor. This form of Maaser can be redeemed and substituted with its monetary value which then had to be spent on food in Jerusalem. Terumah: Goes to the Kohanim and Levi'im from monetary earnings Bechorot- First fruit of a tree, first child born, first animal born- in all these cases the bechorot belonged to the Kohanim- in the case of a child, it was automatically redeemed for 5 shekels. Tzedakah: Charory- we are OBLIGATED to give charity, and this is from out monetary income and is thus money. Now in the case of all the agricultural tithes- Maaser rishon, Maaser sheni, terumah- these ar eonly in force when the Temple stands and the Kohanim offer sacrifices. Thus there is no obligation nowadays to these. The same applies to the agricultural bechorot (i.e. fruit and animals)- though we still redeem first born sons- though this is quite rare as it only happens if it is the first born child, so a previous miscarriage or a girl means this doe snot happen; and if it was a natural birth- so a child born via caeserian does not get redeemed. When it does happen it is known as pidyon Haben and is quite a beautiful ceremony. Now the obligation to charity is always in effect- though it is purely at the givers discretion as to which charity it goes to. Now the form of tithe your pastor is probably basing his answer on is Terumah- which is from bamidbar (Numbers) v21 כא וְלִבְנֵי לֵוִי, הִנֵּה נָתַתִּי כָּל-מַעֲשֵׂר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל לְנַחֲלָה, חֵלֶף עֲבֹדָתָם אֲשֶׁר-הֵם עֹבְדִים, אֶת-עֲבֹדַת אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד. 21 And unto the children of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they serve, even the service of the tent of meeting. Here there si blanket tithe on monetary income- tithes on produce etc are in the other ceatgories. Is your pastors understanding the same as the Jewish one? Not really since this is a tithe that is only applicable when the Temple is standing- but he is correct that it is on all monetary income.

Charity is not tithes and offerings. Tithes need to go to your local church 10% of what God has given you. I do it by Pay period.

Each time you get paid, 10 %--the tithe--belongs to God. Offerings are in addition to tithes & are "seed", the giving of offerings brings blessings into our lives--you can't out-give God. Giving to charity is the same as 'alms' in the Bible; it's giving w/o expecting anything back & is not the same as tihes or offerings. These are 3 different types of giving--hope this helps.

I hope you are willing to entertain the thought that you just may have been deceived on this issue.

Tithing is not a new covenant requirement. It was an old testament requirement, and if we are going to justify keeping even one point of the old covenant law, then why not all of them. That covenant ended, and in any event, Christians were never a party to that covenant.

A tithe, biblically speaking, is / was a tenth of the increase of produce and/or livestock. Tithes were never assessed of one's wages.

Churches and ministers that teach tithing are deceiving people. This is a serious issue, for it has to do with subverting people's souls where they think they have to do certain "works" in order to be saved, thereby abandoning true faith.

Might I remind you about Christ's own words about helping the poor and needy, and that in doing so, you do so to Him?

But giving to a church is not helping the needy; it is helping a wolf to feed his own belly, I don't care how nice and religious he happens to act. They are wolves in sheep's clothing; they appear to be sheep; not wolves.
