During a grab bag with friends, I had to open up a gift in front of them, which embarrassed me a little. Ended up getting the one I brought. Once the group realized, they all felt bad and simultaneously went "Awww". Since the attention was all on me, I tried to back away from the group (and attention), and slightly lifted my shoulders and lowered my head. I quietly said it was ok that I got my own gift. Felt embarrassed from the attention and was blushing. Someone in the group stepped forward and traded gifts with me. The next day, he was talking to me (about something unrelated) and I was very soft-spoken while answering. He started smiling a lot when asking me to repeat myself.

Why did he start grinning? Do you think he was making fun of me?

I think a guy with enough moxie to step up and trade gifts with you is too decent to make fun of you.

Might be, he was thinking that you're very shy (is this possible?) and his smiling was related to a sort of "Aw, ain't she a shy one?" kind of attitude. This isn't the same as making fun of you.

Try speaking up a bit, and even a bit of eye contact when you talk with him. You don't need to get into a blinking contest, just look at him while you make your conversational point.

Have a great New Year!!

Probably just trying to encourage you to come out of your shell. Smiling is a way to show your friendliness, and he probably assumed that if he smiled you would be more comfortable because then you would know he was being friendly and then you would speak up, at least loud enough for him to hear you.

he probably thought you were cute because you were so shy and timid and he probably thought it was kinda funny that he couldnt hear you. you know how sometimes awkward situations can be funny just cause you dont know any other way to react. if someone's smiling i have trouble not smiling back and if its funny thats ok...even if he was laughing at you sort of its kinda funny and you should be able to laugh at yourself. dont worry about it i dont think it was malicious. have a great day!

i don' think he's making fun of you. i agree with the others he's probably shy also and recognizes how difficult it can be interacting sometimes... maybe you can be friends with him i get the impression that at work they like you too.... if not they would have laughed at you instead of empathizing. smile your best smile and hold your head up up up! your new years resolution good luck babe
