Don't know what kind of dog you have or how long you have had it.
I worry most about dogs that are at a new place because when they get out they have no homing intuition. (don't know where to find their food dish yet)
With many breeds the most common mistake is that no provision is left outside for them. If a person will just place their bed out on the front porch, that is where they will find them in the morning. If there is no provision made tho', they will just wander off again during the night.

Not enough information! Depending on circumstances, put up lots of signs around the lost area. Put up breed, color, size, your phone number, and if you are offering a reward. Put up signs at all local vets office (did your animal have on his tags??)
Call the ASPCA any any shelters or rescue groups and put signs on their bulletin boards.
And if and when you get your dog returned, have a chip inserted in his neck. That is great, but only works if the finder ever takes him to the vets office and the vets has a reason to check for a chip.

Get out and look. if your dog loves people, look in places where people gather. If your dog got injured or is shy, it may be hiding. Call and visit animal control and humane societies in your area and report your dog missing. Put up lost dog posters all over your neighborhood. Call vets close to where you live - if your dog was injured, it may end up there.
Tags, microchips and licensing are all important for recovering lost dogs.

If the dog has a microchip call local shelters to see if anyone has brought it in. Hand posters around the area where the dog went missing, search ,ask neighbors, contact humane society.

Post flyers everywhere...vets, pet store, street posts, grocery etc. Also, call you local paper and run a classified ad. Call your local shelters and humane society and file a "lost" report. Also, don't depend on the shelter and h.s. workers 100%, go everyday to each one and look for your self. Good Luck!
