You'll need a good filter, a heater, gravel, some plants and a thermometer. You'll have to cycle the tank and then decide on what fish you want to add.

Did you get a stand for it as well?

Don't put a fish tank on anything that is not a very sturdy object, preferably you should use a stand built for the type of tank you have. Remember, a full fish tank is very very heavy.

There are a few other things to remember, odds are you want to clean out the tank, no? Just make sure you don't use dish soaps or any kind of house hold cleaners, use cleaners specifically made for aquariums. Otherwise, you run the risk of killing your fish before you even really get started.

Set up your tank, filter, gravel, plants (personally I go with fake ones) a lid and a nice back ground. Let the filter run a bit and let the chlorine levels drop to zero. Remember not to put fresh tap water into your tank, the chlorine is not good for the water balance or the fish.

Then go out to the store after a day or two and pick out something hardy like some Zebra Danios (apparently the only fish I have ever heard of) and put them in your tank and nothing else.

Wait a month and the tank should ready for something else but don't just buy any old fish, look up fish and see what should and should not be in your twenty gallon tank and what fish are compatible with what fish.

Good luck with it!

Oh and don't run out and get a Bubble Eyed Goldfish, always a bad choice.

Rinse the tank down with tap water and a cloth. To turn it into a fishtank, you'll need the following:

Filter
Heater (for tropical)
Light (for plants - and makes it easier to see the fish)
Dechloronator (NEVER use untreated tap water)
Plants, rocks, bogwood, ornaments etc
Gravel/sand
Background
Test kit (liquid tests are better than the strips)
Somewhere strong enough to support the weight.

If it's been used for snakes, I assume it has a hood?

Once you've rinsed the tank down, fit the background (if you decide on an internal one, wait for 24-48 hours for the sealant to dry), wash the gravel/sand (it's amazing how dusty gravel is) and place in the tank. Add the decoration and fill with water. Turn the filter and heater (if the tank's going to be tropical) on. The light isn't really important.

Once you've done that, I strongly recommend carrying out a fishless cycle. See the link below for more information:

Once all that's complete, you can add the fish.

Clean it out really, really well; disinfect it with hot water and bleach. Don't want the fishies getting some weird disease!

Now to the list!

Filter/Aerator
Plastic lid and light w/ space for heater and filter access
Heater
Thermometer, a stick on is good enough
Gravel
Plants, live or silk
At least 1 hiding place, like a castle, a rock shelter, etc.

Then you can add decorations and a background if you wish.

Put water in it, let it cycle out, and then add fish!

Remove the snakes,
go to the library and research aquariums,
then consult your parents and a local aquarium retailer
(on second thought, consult your parents, first!). ;)
