I've heard the oboe is very hard to switch to from the clarinet because of the difference in embrouchre and fingerings, but i really like the sound (when played well) but I'm not sure since I don't have time to take private lessons and people have told me it's really hard to switch without a private teacher. And plus I don't want solos in my high school band class since I would be the only oboe.
Bass clarinet I heard is easier to switch to but it gets mostly the boring parts in songs, and I don't really like the sound.
My band teacher suggested alto clarinet but I don't even know what it sounds like or anything. I was just wondering what this was.
Another thing: I looked around my local music stores and asked if I could rent an oboe and every store has said that the (one or two) oboes they had were already rented.
How do I find one to rent if I decide to do the oboe?
(oh, and the reason why is that i've gotten bored of the clarinet.. unfortunately.)

Hang on, why do you want to change FROM the clarinet? That could have some bearing on what you choose.

Right, just got to the end. But I still need to know why you're bored with the clarinet. It can't be the pieces you're playing, because the other instruments would have the same.

This theme of "bored" is a worry. The bass clarinet is one of the more important instruments, being low. The parts might seem to be technically easier, but as the pieces get more advanced, that'll change. And they have to be strong and perfect, because you're the foundation of the band's sound.

I would Strongly Suggest Alto Clarinet Because Its Portable and Easier to Carry around than the Bass and The Oboe is Double reeded And that makes it Hard. Alto Clarinet is A Under-Estimated Instrument but to me Sounds the Best than all the others because it can Go to the B flats's Low Notes to the Bass's High Notes and does it Better than the both of em! Alittle Transposing would have to be done.

Life is too short to play an instrument you're not crazy about! ;-)

I played oboe and later switched to bassoon. I loved both instruments. Yes, it's completely different from the clarinet. So what? Go for it. Playing the oboe is fun and you obviously are itching to give it a go. And you can always go back to clarinet if you hate the oboe. Or you can try something new.

I've noticed that you've asked this question several times. I think that this is a decision you have to make yourself. Talk with your band director. Complete strangers can't really offer that much help.

But . . . don't switch to alto clarinet. The alto clarinet is the least common for a good reason - it's difficult to play it in tune and with a good sound. Most pieces can be played without the alto clarinet, too.

I played both clarinet and oboe ( and others). they are very different. I agree with above...get harder music, not another instrument. playing the oboe, I remember sitting counting measure after measure waiting my turn to play. that was boring!

Keep playing the clarinet. If you are bored, get harder music to play. You will just get bored again if you switch instruments.
