They recommend about half an hour or so of weight training at the gym...I'm curious, do you guys actually do this and approximately how many weight lifting machines does that equate to?

It really depends on your goals. If you're trying to lose flab and tone up, half an hour is good as long as you don't spend a lot of time standing around. If you're trying to add muscle to your frame, aim for 45 minutes or so. Anything over an hour is overtraining.

It's hard to quantify gym time because a lot of it depends on how many people are there. If it's not busy, you can pack a lot into a 30-minute or 45-minute workout, but if you're there at peak time and have to wait for machines, your workout will be less productive. So your best bet is to go during off-hours if you can. If you're trying to lose flab and tone up, do circuit training (one set of exercises per machine, aiming for 8-10 machines that will work all the major muscle groups, moving as quickly as possible from one machine to the next) and try to get at least 2 full circuits in -- 3 would be better. If you want to bulk up, aim for 7 to 9 different exercises where you're lifting heavy and doing 5 sets of 5 reps, taking a full 2 seconds to raise the weight and a full 4 seconds to lower the weight, and make sure you rest for a minute and a half to 2 minutes seconds between sets.

Yes you should be doing 90 minutes of exercise or more a day, which is pretty much an hour and a half. Dont go overboard on the weight your doing,, just relax.
