I consider this notion just as ridiculous as "he's got a lot of heart!"
It means nothing special. Best I can tell, it refers vaguely to emotion and conviction. Strong feelings and feeling strongly.
Obviously, to base important decisions entirely on emotion is generally a very irrational course of action that almost certainly lacks foresight and sound judgment. This can lead to, well, all sorts of calamity.
I'm an atheist.

Follow your heart, listen to it, whatever... What I mean when I say it is this: No matter how logical or easy something may seem, I know I won't be happy with myself if I do it.
For example, it would be logical and easy for me to go back into banking. I have experience, I'm good at it, the pay is decent, but I hate it - the stress, the moodiness, the feeling trapped. So I'm "following my heart" and doing the crazy thing of going back to school. An hour drive each way, full time, with young kids, finding babysitters and stealing study time, having my plans changed at the last minute because the program director has something else we are required to do and all of this after being out for over a decade just to get an associate degree of all things!
Now I assume you meant this as far as a belief in a God/Goddess but is it really so different? Logically atheism makes sense. Holding to a main stream religion would be easier but I "follow my heart" and find my own path. One that satisfies me despite the problems that accompany it.

If you listen to "your heart," and it guides you in the right direction, then it was actually God speaking.
If things go wrong, then either you were fooled by the other invisible, impotent God, called Satan; or you were punished by God for listening to your heart instead of him.
For example, those people who didn't go to work in the Twin Towers on 9/11/01 were listening to God.
Yeah, right.
Then they should be prosecuted for not passing the "word" to the 3000+ who died that day.
I'm sure YoMamma's Bin Hidin is somewhere in a cave in Pakistan, testifying that God's voice has saved him from us evil Americans.
God should be punished for allowing such evil to exist. But since he has done nothing about it, it must be His will.
It would all be funny, but so many people buy into it, which makes it very sad.
Our edumication system is failing us.

Heyya "Bari" :)
I, for one, do not believe in the idea that the heart is always right. You get to a certain age, and you see the destruction your decisions could do.
I DO, however, listen with my heart (I usually say "soul"). Especially when I'm seeking out the will of God or the movement of the Holy Spirit in my life.
My faith tradition? United Methodist. With a smattering of Universalism, dash of Baha'i, with appreciations for Islam and Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism....
I'm also a Trekkie, which hasn't beenofficially recognized as a religion.... so far.
peace

I think it means to listen with compassion. That's fine, but you also need to keep your brain in operation, too. And put your BS filters on high gain whenever your heart is getting involved. Some people are remarkably good at tugging at your heart with stories that bear very little resemblance to the truth.

That depends -- are you following your whims, or your Will? Are you following the fleeting urgings of your conscious ego, or the deeper desires of your True Self? "Listen to your Heart," does require some clarification -- and much self knowledge -- to be effective. Our minds, egos, intellects, and emotions can lead us into confusion, mistakes, bad decisions, regrets. But to listen to the voice of our Spirits, that is to find The Path toward knowing our True Will.

for example :
some times you listen to a music and your of coarse only hearing the music.
but once you listen to a music, understanding the meaning feeling what it is saying, thinking on the meaning & the feeling. ==> that's called listening by your heart.
the adventage and disadventage depends on what your lestining to. it's good to always listen to things deeply, but there comes times which you wish that you hadent knew some things and you hadent ever heard them(you hadn't listen to them by heart.)
