I have always gone to midnight mass, but guess I don't remember from Catholic school. What is the meaning behind mass being at midnight specifically for Christmas?

It has been a tradition for a long time. (See sources). It has a lot of sentimental value. A lot of people felt it was the best way to start the holiday.

Since the Church follows the old testament tradition of the day running from sunset to sunset, more people are going to vigil masses. Since we have fewer priests now it is also a burden to celebrate at midnight and be up for the early morning mass.

Our 4PM vigil children's mass is very well attended by families. It is a good reminder of the real meaning of Christmas for the children before they get toys.
