I want to find a dog for my dad. his just died at age 14. he has a cat that is up to date on all shots. the pup had parvo at 10 weeks old. the lady states he is cured. she states that he is healthy. sounds like the dog needs a permanent home as she lives house to house at the present time. she cant keep him as due to her living situatiopn. i dont want my dad stuck with huge vet bills or a sickly dog.

My parvo survivor is the best of the bunch.

Once cured its over. If he had it at ten weeks and he is ten months now he isn't even shedding it anymore.

Go for it.

Once a dog has had Parvo it is immune.

One vet I worked with would use the serum from a dog that has had Parvo to help build immunities in another dog that has Parvo.

Bleach will kill Parvo ( 1 to10 ratio). I suggest you either wash dishes that the dog comes with or purchase your own.

The dog is perfectly safe to have around other animals.

Looks like the parvo advice here is good, just one extra word of caution. Be sure your Dad is ready for a new dog. Even though your intentions are great, if he isn't ready and this is a surprise, he might never love her and become attached like he normally would.

A dog that has lived thru parvo is pretty much immune. Ask her for Vet records on the dog, or ask her to pay to have it examined and deemed healthy before you adopt him.

Don't trust what the original owner says. Take the puppy to a vet and have him checked out. If he is healthy now, consider buying the wellness policy at Banfield Clinic. It covers their shots and check ups and teeth cleaning. It runs a little over $20 a month and has saved me thousands of dollars. Just one visit to the vet for vaccines and with teeth cleaning can cost $300. which is more than the cost of the policy for the whole year. Best investment I ever made.

Absolutely! If it was treated by a vet they for sure vaccinated him/her for everything they can at that age. What a lucky pup! Parvo is only contagious to other dogs.

yes, as long as you don't bring anything else but the dog into the house. To be on the safe side, ask for vet documents, and buy your own water dish and bedding. The disease can live for a long time on the dog's items if the dog vommited on them or had an accident.

He should be fine. If you *really* want to be sure, the vet can take some blood and run a titer test to see if he is, but he should be fine. That way you'll also know if he needs to be vaccinated again.
