I spayed my dog last friday, and i know they told me to limit activity for 10 days, but am afraid i'm going too conservatively. I'll take her for about a fifteen minute walk twice a day. Is that too little?

Walking your dog is fine - it's the running and especially jumping you need to stop her from doing. Don't know what breed she is, if she's a larger, active dog, you should be able to increase the length of her walks by now. You know your dog best - how is she after 15 minutes? If she's feeling great, try 3 walks a day.

Please remember that a spay is comparable to a hysterectomy in a woman. A woman may need to stay in the hospital for days, and when she comes home she is not allowed to go up stairs or do much activity for weeks.

Ideally this is what would be best for your dog for optimal healing, but realistically your dog won't stay this quiet, and thus she puts a lot tension on the sutures. This tension may cause inflammation of the incision, a weeping of serous fluid (clear to bloody liquid) from the incision, and slower healing. This is common in very active puppies, overweight dogs, large breed dogs, and adult dogs where a lot tension is put on the incision and sutures. This tension comes from the dog's movements and the weight of the abdominal organs.

She SHOULD NOT be running, Jumping, or any other kind of activities that can This tension may also cause inflammation of the incision.

So, I would Just give her as little exercise as possible. As long as she does not try to 'exercise in her own way' then the amount you are giving, should be enough. If she is restless alot, then i would lengthen the walks.

I would also lengthen the walks about 10 minutes each in a couple days. As she heals, she will want more exercise.

Good luck

Should be about right in the beginning but at about the 5-6 day mark you can begin to extend 5 min. at a time. She should be your best gauge of what's right (if she has too much energy left, go longer/if she's dragging by the time you get back, shorten it). Most of the limitations they have in mind are more about running around, jumping up/down and playing with others, etc. so for walks I would just kind of let her be your guide and build her strength back up at her own pace. Thank you for being responsible and having her spayed!

It's better to keep her in the house for the full 10 days as directed by your veterinarian. You can resume your regular walks afterward.

Think about it -- if you just had a major organ removed a couple of days ago, would you REALLY want to get out there and run laps around the block?

when my dog was spayed i was told i could walk her for upto an hour lead walks only, walking helps the healing process, and keeping her on the lead prevents fluid building up in the area.
15 mins 2x daily is fine, you know your dog best.

Watch her for signs, 15 to 30 minutes is probably ok as long as you are not running. When she is tired she will let you know. Better to be careful than break loose some stitches.

That should be ok. By restricting activity, the Vet means leash walk only and no running, jumping or encouraged rough play.

You should go really easy on her until like the 9th or 10th day so she can back to normal routine. She is probably really sore and tired.. If she needs you can just let her sleep all day till she regains her energy.
