My wifes Mom is in an assisted living home in Minnesota and her health is fading. We need to get up to Minnesota to help with her because she has no family there with her. We have looked everywhere to find help getting there to no avail. We live in Beaumont, Texas and we are on a limited budget. If you have any ideas please help.

If your mother in law is in assisted living, she must pay for it somehow. The big question is, who has power of attorney, etc. If your MIL needs more help, check her finances first. Assisted living usually has some home health company on the premesis who charge and arm and a leg for any services. Have you checked into non medical senior care to come in every day and help your MIL? It may be more cost effective. If your MIL czan not safely stay at assisted living anymore, the assisted living facility is under obligation to help her transfer to a nursing home. If your wife has POA, she is entitled to a small fee for managing the accounts but needs to document it. That may help you get to Minnesota.

Ask the Red Cross if they can help or know of any organizations that can help you.

In our community they call it First Call For Help and they have listings for people in situations like yours.
