It works well to just use the box and put a peepad in it rather than litter. All you have to do is get the pad wet from their scent outside and let them smell it. They will "mark" where the scent is. It's downhill from there.

Just a thought.....
I have a 2 year old Pug, Maggie....she's the absolute most defiant animal I have ever owned but..... I love her dearly!

She has used a pad since I got her at 6 weeks. She's two years old now. I put the pad down by the front door (because that's the door she would go to to go outside) and from that day on she has used them every day. I live upstairs in an apartment and I can't take her out al all hours of the day so it has worked out really well for me. The only real drawback is that it's like having a baby, picking up the pad and disposing of it. I go to the medical supply here and buy the large pink pads that are actually intended for medical purposes but they are big enough for Maggie to do "her circles" until she finds the right spot... Good Luck!

I've never trained a dog to use a litter box!!! Wow. I would suspect just like to train them to go outside. When you see them about to go, immediately take them to the box. And see if they learn

Can you make a frame and put in a yard of grass?? I think they might like that better. You could build it from wood and seal it inside and even line with a black trash can and put in the grass. The problem right now might be finding a yard of grass.
The pet store has those pad you can buy while you are training a puppy that might also work.

I have a mini dachshund and live in a high rise, so we trained him to go inside in what's called a "Pet-a-potty". It's great - they come in all sizes, and you just throw a puddle pad on top. My dog goes on that whenever it's too cold to take him out. I wouldn't recommend using litter though - doesn't seem necessary for a dog.

You train your dogs to use the box just as you trained them to go outside. Make sure you get dog litter--it is basically ground paper, not sand like for cats. Also, there is spray you can use to make the littler box smell like grass and appeal to them.

Warning: I trained my yorkie to use the litter box, but after a while it was just gross--nothing like cats. The smell was awful and the litter is much more expensive than cat litter. So, I got rid of the box and just made him go outside. If it's cold, stand outside with them and keep them company, telling them to go to the bathroom constantly. If they refuse to go, put them in their cages for 10-15 minutes, then take them back outside. They'll catch on and learn to go very quickly when it's cold.

Well
Understanding how to train your dog and how to correct bad behaviours is very important. That's why I suggest to follow a good training course. There are plenty of books and training material. One online course I recommend (I like it because it has hundreds of videos) is http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=572

It helped me a lot.
Bye Bye

I wouldn't recommend it due to possible respiritory infections. Cats have more selective sinuses which protect their respiritory system better but dogs are easily prone to infections from high amounts of dust from the clay. I'd suggest you get some winter gear for them and keep them warm while outside.
