Screen burn-in is when a fixed image is repeatedly displayed on a screen, the screen becomes permanently discoloured where the unchanging image was. In the good old days of cathode ray tubes, that's why we needed animated screensavers (and that's why they were called screensavers). It doesn't happen with LCD screens, but plasma screens are susceptible to it and modern ones are fitted with "burn in reduction", which reduces the brightness and contrast of the screen for gaming.
