Hypothesis testing.
That narrows it down pretty well.

The problem isn't that the method isn't good, but if you get an answer to your prayers, you probably will be held accountable for how you deal with that response. And it isn't just a good feeling, either. It is a direct, spirit-to-spirit response that you are seeking. Good feelings can come from many things, but a direct response has only one source. And that is something that is hard to deny or ignore, for you have received a witness and there are no questions about whether it might have been something that one imagined or if it was real. There is no self convincing of its reality (though that can happen). The spiritual witness that one receives is unlike anything you have ever experienced before (or at least, it was for me) and sometimes, the response is very much unexpected in what it says. What are some of the things that can cause a delay in getting a response? One does not want to know One has already made up their mind (they already "know" that it can't be real) One isn't serious about the prayer One comes at it from an intellectual point of view (this was my problem) One isn't patient. Note that I do not have "One isn't listening" in my list. Believe me, you'll know it when you get a response. TDs expected

Learn to have doubt in the words that are told to you by others and search your soul for the answers which are within you, live a positive life with an open mind towards others.
And then after many years of self reflection and when you have found balance in yourself then you will be able to determine your own true beliefs.
After all of this you can then make comparison with those on offer.

I'm not sure; but one thing at least that always
points to a false religion is any edict against
reading widely; questioning and studying a
range of sources outside whatever they
provide. That is, if some religious organization
promotes a closed system of information by
, for example, saying it's sinful to read additional
material or ask questions and so forth, then
it is surely a false religion.

Simple. The "true" religious beliefs are the beliefs of whoever is the most persuasive debater in the room.
Though if you want a more practical answer: see which sets of belief seem to be the most consistent with your own experiences in life, and also give you something to work with. There's no single religion that's for everybody.

Examine in prayer the historical truth.
Examine in prayer the critics of the religion.
Examine in prayer the religious belief of the faithful follower both current and historical.
This works best for me.

Study all religions in depth. One key to studying religions is to try to understand what the writers are trying to say. Why does the religion exist in the first place? What good can it bring to you and the world? Do not take religions too literally. There are a lot of metaphors which can slowly come to have more meaning to you as time passes.

Prayer. Study it out in your own mind, come the best conclusion that you can with available data, submit it to the Lord in prayer. If you feel peace - Bingo move on to the next question. If you remain confused then you are not done yet.

Pray that God will lead you to a perfect Master like Jesus was - he can teach you a method of meditation that enables you to see the reality for yourself (without needing to read scriptures or take anyones word for it)

Simple, really. If it is a religious belief, it is false.
