It can in different ways (and i am not looking up on the internet, i have epilepsy for 14 years):

If u feel it is "ruining your life" or its embarrassing to you, it may cause you to become depressed. I never became depressed about it until now because they have been bad ones where i had to go on med. leave and move home.

Another reason is your meds. Some have side effects that cause depression. amongst other side effects. but the side effects are worth not having a seizure. you know what i mean?
There are other seizure meds that stabilize your mood, such as depakote and lamictal. (For example, i was on Depakote for years. Recently, they changed it to a new one and it is a little depressing (the side effects, that is).

Last reason (that i can think of): every seizure affects your brain chemistry. so it depends what kind of seizure you have (what part of the brain). They can affect the seratonin or dopamine, for example, which can de-neutralize you mood.

Thats the reasons i can think of...look at your med side effects first. then write down your feelings about epilepsy and how you think it has affected you life now and how your life was pre-epilepsy. THEN talk to your neurologist about your concerns, ok? as about brain chemistry.

NOW...go google "seizures depression"

Good luck and I understand how are feeling. Stay strong. xoxo

about 5 years ago, I started to fall into a really depressive episode. At first I thought it was only because I had a bad break from a relationship but the feelings wouldn't go away even after I got a new girlfriend. It was wrecking my life until a point where it was seriously affecting my work and personal life. She was very worried but at the same time couldn't understand why I was still sad and thought that I still couldn't let go of my previous relationship. Being the wonderful person that she is, she put aside her feelings and suggested I go for psychiatric evaluation. Many months later and even more anti-depressants, I was not coming close to being better at all. After doing some research online, I found out the real cause as you described it really makes a lot of sense and purchased this program. The results were simply astonishing. I read this book over three times and put all words in action. Using this method, I've kept my depression at bay ever since. Up to date I'm still living happily with my girlfriend. Not always, but it can - depending on what part of the brain is affected. If depression is caused by epilepsy, its likely that antidepressants are necessary to have normal moods.

Hello,
Very, very common.
I do not think it is so much our seizures as how others perceives us. People get to the point they are afraid of us for they never know when we will get sick, and soon they back off not wanting to hang out.
We also never know when a seizure will happen thus some of us are careful and no "fun". Alcohol and drugs are extremely bad and some of us are not allowed to drive.
The medication for seizures are, in my experience, as bad as the seizures themselves.
So yes depression can set it......it can be a lonely life.

Not in all cases. Both are centered in the brain, but depending on what areas and if anti depressant medication is taken alone, or in conjunction with phenobarbitol or diazepam to co-act with the anti seizure medication. Hope this helps, somewhat.
