It's a common misconception that barking when people come in the house is a sign of a good watch dog. Actually, it's not particularly desirable behavior, because intruders rarely announce themselves by knocking on and waltzing in the front door.

A two-pronged approach is best : Teach him the command "quiet", and train him to alert you to UNUSUAL noises.

One way to stop the barking: When he barks at anything you don't want him to bark at, shove a biscuit in his mouth and say "quiet". He can't bark with a biscuit in his mouth. If he is a stubborn barker, use a spray bottle of water and the "quiet" command. If he goes to the door at the sound of a knock, push him back and let him know that it's your job to "get the door".

If you want him trained as an effective watchdog, you need two people working together. One person sits inside with the dog, and one person is outside scratching at the window or trying the doorknob or scratching at the lock on the door with a tool of some kind. When you and the dog hear the strange noise, you jump up and make a bit of a commotion, encouraging him to do the same.

Yes, there is hope! We have four dogs and Halloween was a real learning experience for them! We always allow them to bark to let us know there is someone here or that there is something out of the ordinary. But then we tell them "thank you, enough." If they do not stop, we make them look at us and stop focusing on what they are barking at. We then tell them "that is enough."

You can use a spray bottle to spray between the eyes when they do not stop, or a soda pop can, cleaned and dried and filled with 13 pennies (your dogs unlucky number!) and shake this and say "enough!" Or say "no!" Whatever reprimand you use is fine, just don't yell, remain calm and use a firm tone and really mean it! Also, using guttural sounds like "eh, eh", or 'quiet" are usually quite effective at getting a dog to respond to you instead of what they have been focusing on.

Also, we never allow the dogs to greet anyone until they are calm and sitting. This is good manners and keeps you in control as the leader of your pack!

As Cesar Millan says, you have to "claim the door". Get a friends to practice with you.
Get to the door ahead of the dog and using a sharp noise and you hand...move them back from the door and block them with your body. Be calm and tall and assertive. Each time they come toward the door, back them off with the stance, the hand and the noise(a grunt, a shush). Do not use their name. You will be surprised how fast they learn to back off from your assertive posture. Have your friend ring the bell or knock and again, block the dog from the door and create a space between them and the door and using the noise you make (a grunt, a shush, whatever) Each time they advance or bark use the body language, posture and noise and hand. It will take repeated use but my dog learned it in one session.

We wanted our dog to bark once, without rushing the door because we use him as the doorbell. But he has learned to bark and then stop. You can have control if you insist on it.
Get him into a position that he would bark. Let him bark once or twice and then use the noise and hand to stop him. Each time let him bark once or twice before you stop him. He will learn that once is OK. Stay with the training it may take a week or two.

Try getting a bark collar.
Most collars have a warning period of a few loud beeps and that will tell the dog to stop. I use this on my hunting dogs works very well. They know your not messing around when that collar comes on and they hear that sound. They will get the point very fast. Its the beeping that gets the dogs attention. you only have to shock the dog once or maybe twice. and then try using the SHHH command. hope this helps

Tell them ssshhhhh! and if they don't listen move them to another room and close the door. You can bring them out once they are calm. If they bark, they go back in the room.
