There isn't much you can say or do. When my Oliver died I sent an email to everyone and told them that he had died and please don't ask me about it or express condolences because I wasn't ready. And every time I clean out old emails I just can't delete that one.
Her loss is not any less because her friend was a dog than if the loss had been a human. Send her a card on the loss of her good friend and wait for her to say anything else.

Hallmark & I am sure other card companies, now make cards for the loss of a pet. Might I suggest making a donation to a nearby shelter in memory of her dear dog? Give her the card with a note inside about the donation & how you are there for her in any way that she needs you to be. Sometimes it just helps to know that someone else takes the death of your pet seriously.

I work at pet food center, where i communicate with pets and their people. Often times, they share their losses, either a pet or person. The most you could do is hold them and let them cry it out, and give them your number if they need anything. Tell them it will be okay and make sure they know that ot will get easier. Ive had to do this at work very often

My good friend lost her 2 year old puppy over Christmas also. Her sister in law bought a memory plant. "Mom" was brought to tears. If you are a dog person also, sometimes just a shoulder, a good listening ear and a hug will do the trick!

Well I had these words given to me when I had my pooch put down..it helped me see that I was doing the right thing.....
"Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing, and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing, and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun.
Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands."

I highly recommend a poem called The RainbowBridge and the pet loss website. Just enter Rainbow Bridge Poem in your search engine and it will give you the website. There are lots of options and info about grief and memories there and it is wonderful.

Just your kind words and thoughts will be good. But maybe you can commemorate her pet by buying a stone w/ the dog's name on it, she can put it outside in her garden.

Here is a poem she might like.
PUT ME TO REST
Time to let me go my friend,
Because my life no-one can mend,
Its better to let me go this way,
Than watch me suffer night and day.
I'm happy to go, my time has come,
My quality of life is no longer fun,
Ive been so ill, so its not a bad thing,
To let me go forever resting.
Stay with me till I drift away,
Fast asleep forever I pray,
To relieve me from suffering and pain,
What more can I ask from my best friend.
Don't be sad, I'll be free from pain,
Never to be ill ever again,
I know you'll miss me being there,
But all the memories you have to share.
Thankyou for being my best friend,
And all my needs that you did tend,
Try not to be sad, try not to cry,
Now's the time to say GOODBYE PUT ME TO REST
other htan that just be there for your friend everyone mourns differently.

Make a donation to your local humane society in memory of her pet. Someone did this for me and I was touched.
